Recently, I've been watching a lot of Netflix (who hasn't) and it's got me thinking about some of my favorite TV series!
1. "The X-Files"
"The X-Files" has been a popular show since it first came out in the 1990s. A show about murder, mystery, the supernatural, and aliens is bound to be good right? (Right.) The show features a running storyline that involves the characters FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, while also featuring a "Monster of the Week." The show was so popular it produced two movies and even came back for a 10th season in 2016 with David Duchovny (Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (Scully) reprising their roles. I started watching it on Netflix a couple of years ago and finished the first nine series and tie-in movies just in time for the 10th season to come out.
2. "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation"
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" was the original TV show from which many other "CSI" shows have sprouted. The original is based in Las Vegas. The show was very popular during its run. It usually sports a crime of the week while threading in background stories for each character in the show. This was one of the first TV series I was really interested in. The original characters were the best and I was very sad when new characters were introduced while the old ones moved onto different projects. However, in the last episode of the series some of the original characters make a reappearance to ties up loose ends and I thought it was magical.
3. "Crossing Jordan"
"Crossing Jordan" premiered in 2001 and follows the character of Dr. Jordan Cavanaugh, a Boston medical examiner. She is stubborn but good at solving crimes. This was the first TV series I remember watching and being so engrossed with the storyline and characters. My grandma used to record the episodes on VHS tapes - that's how long ago this show was on. A couple of years ago I got the chance to rewatch the entire series and I loved it even more than when I was younger. If you take a look at the cast, you'll notice a lot of people who have gone on to star in other TV shows or movies, specifically actress Kathryn Hahn, who most recently was in the movie "Bad Moms."
4. "Shameless"
"Shameless" follows the Gallagher family as they stumble through life. No character is perfect and they are always ending up in trouble. Yet, they tend to bounce back from their setbacks and support one another. Yes, this is the show that everyone is talking about - for good reason. Of course, this is a fictional show, but some of the situations are so real and relatable it's no wonder so many watch it! The actors are fantastic and very far removed from any other project they have been in (that I've seen). I have never binge-watched a show faster than this one. Now, this is a show that runs on Showtime, so the content is explicit which means it's not for everyone. But if you think this might be up your alley, give it a try!
5. "Poldark"
"Poldark" is a melodramatic series that appears on PBS. The show is based on a series of books by Winston Graham. It follows the life of Captain Ross Poldark after he returns to Cornwall following the war for Independence of America. I am going to be really honest here... I took one look at this show and simultaneously hated it and loved it. I was instantly sucked into the predictable drama of the show and I couldn't stop watching it. I complained loudly at the TV and to my uninterested grandma while watching the first season. Then I introduced it to my grandpa and now he's hooked.
I am very picky with what shows I chose to watch and it usually takes a lot of convincing me to try a show. I am not much of a binge-watcher, so when I pick a show to watch, that is the only show I'll be watching for the next couple of months. To TV!
