While people were obsessing over how awful Donald Trump is or how crooked they think Hilary Clinton is, people missed what I would consider some pretty important news stories this past week:
1. Hurricane Matthew is about to slam into Haiti and Jamaica.
This hurricane is packing 150 mph winds and has caused hundreds of Naval Base employees to evacuate Guantanamo Bay and has a projected path of slamming into Haiti and Jamaica. This hurricane will have devastating effects.
2. A 6-year-old victim of Carolina elementary school shooting dies.
In my opinion, this school shooting along with any other school shooting should have been made breaking news on outlets like CNN and Fox News. I always get breaking news notifications from my CNN app and I did not get one for this news story... how awful that we are so focused on this debate and the election that we did not know of an elementary school shooting.
3. The former NYC mayor said this in response to allegations of cheating on his wife, "Everyone does."
Usually, when someone who is well known makes a comment like this, people have some pretty interesting comments on it. Not one comment this time, in fact, comments were made by Mr. Trump defending Rudy Giuliani. Shocker right?
4. A historic Virginia Black School was vandalized with racist messages.
This single room school house opened in 1892 and offered African American children in northern Virginia an education. For the last two years, students have worked to restore the school and turn it into a museum. Over the weekend it was vandalized with swastikas, drawings of genitals and other derogatory messages.
5. Two sisters from the United States found dead at their resort.
According to CNN, "Two American sisters found unresponsive in their resort in the Seychelles died of excess fluid in their lungs, according to authorities in the island nation off Africa's east coast.
Autopsies performed Wednesday showed Robin Korkki, 42, of Chicago, and Anne Korkki, 37, of Denver, died from acute pulmonary edema, or fluid in the lungs, police told the Seychelles News Agency.
Cerebral edema, or excess fluid in the brain, also contributed to Anne Korkki's death, the news agency reported.
No explanation was offered for the fluid buildup in the women's lungs."
