5 New Year's Resolutions That Everyone Should Have

Minimal effort, maximal reward.

5 New Year's Resolutions That Everyone Should Have

As 2015 comes to a close and 2016 is on the horizon, you may find yourself feeling the need to write down a list of New Year's resolutions. You may be grumbling about the fact that the gym will be packed with newcomers, or you may be one of those newcomers. You may resolve to make more money, get a better job, or do better in school. You may even believe that New Years resolutions aren’t even worth making. Whatever category you fall under, these five resolutions should be on everyone’s mind.

1. Spread love

In a world seemingly filled with hate, it is important for each and every one of us to try to spread more love in the New Year. Everyone is fighting a battle you may know nothing about, and we are all vulnerable. It could be something as effortless as smiling at strangers when you walk down the street or something as grandiose as organizing fundraising efforts for those in need. Stripped down to the core we are all human, and we must all make a conscious effort to remember that and treat each other right.

2. Put your phone down

Too many times this year have I looked around while sitting on a bus or walking to class and noticed that everyone around me was looking down at his or her phone. It’s sad when people you know walk right past you or don’t even hear you say hello because they are too involved in their devices. We have let our technologies consume us, and that is a real tragedy. In 2016, put your phone down. Take in the sights around you, even if you see them every day. Look at people, not screens. Give social media a rest and socialize with the people around you. Not only will this most likely benefit your poor eyeballs, but it’s impossible to see the beauty around you if your head is looking down.

3. Educate yourself

2016 brings with it the presidential election! If you haven’t already, this is the time to start doing your research. One of the biggest responsibilities we have as citizens is voting. If you are unhappy with the way our country is being run, or would like to see certain things change in the future, you have the power to educate yourself and vote for the person you believe will get the job done. Research the candidates and find out whose views align with yours. It is so important to vote but even more important to be an educated voter. Take the time you would spend watching Netflix and do some research.

4. Take care of yourself

Too often we let our lives go astray without realizing it. School or work takes control, and we forget that unless we take care of ourselves, we cannot take care of others or other things. In 2016, be sure to take care of yourself. Your mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing is important and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Take a yoga class, read a good book, talk to someone, or take up a hobby you’ve always wanted to try. And remember, there is no shame in asking for help.

5. Think positively

The power of positive thought is strong. If you tend to dwell on things or automatically assume the worst, try to make an effort to change your mindset. As soon as you start thinking about problems as small challenges that you can get past, you will accomplish much more. Try to look on the bright side and embrace each day as a clean slate with a lot of potential. Thinking positively will leave you with less stress, and people will be drawn to the good energy you exude.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
