5 New Year's Resolutions Even I Can Keep

I'm determined this year to keep my resolutions.

Every year, everyone says "New year, new me" -- but how often does that really hold true? This year, I'm determined to keep the one's I'm making.

1. Be less apologetic.

I have a bad habit of apologizing for everything -- and I mean everything. Whether it's in an argument, or about something that I said that I shouldn't have to apologize about, or if it's about my religious or political views, I'm going to quit apologizing for being me.

2. Be happy with myself.

I need to not try to make myself be someone I'm not and to realize that I'm an incredible person and that there's no one else on earth like me. I've found an incredible group of friends that show me the best in me, and push me to better myself each and every day. I'm thankful for their friendship and the lessons they've taught me already and I can't wait to see what the future has in store for all of us.

3. Be healthier.

Everyone says this, but I'm determined to be healthier this year. I've gone to the gym more often and I'm being more conscious about what I'm eating on a day to day basis. I've been drinking more water and less soda, and have been snacking on fruit instead of snacky foods. I've noticed a difference in my attention and my energy levels, and I've also noticed a boost in my self-confidence. I'm excited to already see these changes and I can't wait to see how far I can go with this.

4. Focus more on my grades.

This semester is already off to an incredible start academics wise, and I'm determined to keep it that way. I decided to take 18 credit hours, so with the larger work load, I've had to change my study habits. I've started taking notes before my lectures, and have then after class, I go back through and highlight specific points that were talked about more during lecture. It's helped keep me more organized and focused since I'm able to listen to my professors instead of trying to frantically scribble down notes.

5. Enjoy times with friends and family.

I'm not going to take anything or anyone for granted. A lot has happened in the past year and it's shown me how quickly life can change. You truly never know when the last time you'll see someone is. I've made it a point to tell my friends how much they mean to me every time I see them because I want them to know that they are loved and that they're special to me in a way that they can't even begin to understand. I'm also planning on going home and seeing my family more, surprising my little brothers and seeing my parents because going away for school is hard and I miss them more than I'd probably willingly admit.

Even though it's a small list, it's one that I know I can keep. I'm excited for this year and for all the amazing things to come! Bring it on!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
