I love Netflix. I love having the freedom to watch hundreds of TV series and movies anytime I want. However, there is a problem when "anytime I want" becomes all the time. I love Grey's Anatomy and stuff just as much as the next person, and it's so hard to stop, even if you tell yourself "just one more episode" (it's almost never just one more). But once you reach the end of the summer and realize that all you did with your time was finish 3 whole series and watched every rom-com that looked good, you might regret not doing more with your summer. Here are five things you could do this summer that are a better than gluing your eyes to a computer screen.
1. Read a book. Or several.
I'm a book addict, so I'm a little biased about this one. But reading is kind of like Netflix: the stories are just as good (if not better), once you start, it's hard to stop, and you get sucked into the characters' world. Also, they can be educational and improve your vocabulary and grammar. It's a win-win.
2. Work out.
If going to a big, sweaty gym with big, intimidating men isn't your thing, there are other ways: running through a park, taking a yoga or cycling class, stand up paddle boarding, hiking, climbing, etc., but take care of yourself. Your body will thank you for not just laying in bed watching TV for hours on end.
3. Learn something new.
Start learning a new language just for the hell of it. Go to a pottery or art class. Ask your mom to teach you her favorite recipes. Go to a museum or art gallery and try to look at the exhibits with a creative perspective.
4. Volunteer.
You're probably home for the summer, so give back to the community that you grew up in before you headed to college. Work at food drives, tutor kids, or, my personal favorite, volunteer at the animal shelter. You get to play with cute dogs and cats and you're doing good.
5. Road trip.
It doesn't have to be an expensive, extravagant trip. Visit one of your friends from college who lives in another state. Take a friend along and split the price of gas, and enjoy the views of places you've never seen before.
