Ever need a playful background show you can just tune-in and tune-out whenever you want, but still understand the plot?
Those shows you watch before bed to help you fall asleep? The kind of shows you keep up with just so you have something to gossip about with your friends? Those guilty pleasure kind-of shows that has a familiar family-time approach, but also heavily emphasizes its fascination with sex?
If you answered yes to three out of four of the questions, then you're probably looking for a quirky comedy-drama to watch. No worries though, because I've got you covered.
1. Younger (2015)
You got your average small town girl who moves to the Big Apple, now stuck in a situation that she put herself in yet she can hardly handle it.
But don't forget her hot young boyfriend and handsome yet wiser and older boss, who is very fond of her - basically your typical love triangle. It share a few similarities to Sex and the City (1998), but has much more of a modern twist as well as a subjective narrative. It's also interesting to see a glimpse of what goes on behind-the-scene of a book publishing company.
Who knew drama wasn't just a genre of a literature.
2. The Mindy Project (2012)
Mindy Lahiri is a successful woman of color and a daughter of two Indian immigrants. She works in a male dominated field and she is quite good at her job.
Surprised? Well you shouldn't be in today's economy.
Mindy Lahiri is a bold feminist with a quirky personality. Most of the episodes are targeted at 21st century societal issues, tackling matters such as domestic abuse, gender stereotypes, portrayal of sex, divorce parents, and the ideal of Western beauty in a humorous yet meditative approach.
Feminism plays a significant part in today's culture, representing women as smart and strong individuals who are capable of doing what they want and not what they're told. Mindy Lahiri is the perfect example of a feminist and "The Mindy Project" is truly a feminist masterpiece.
3. New Girl (2011)
A humorous and quirky school teacher goes through a rough breakup, and ends up moving into an apartment with three single dudes. Schmidt, Winston, and Nick help tie the show together, with perky Jess driving the plot.
It's an enjoyable and cute show with a great cast that never fails to disappoint you with wise-cracks and humor.
4. Jane The Virgin (2014)
This meta-telenovela, rom-com and somewhat reality television show is my favorite guilty pleasure.
You basically have all of your essentials: the overly-exaggerated yet deeply heartfelt situation, a variety of love interests including a love triangle, childhood and family troubles, an aspiring writer as the main character and of course, some kind of mischievous nonsense where there's a chance of someone dying or getting badly injured - usually has to do with sex, drugs or both.
"Jane The Virgin" is a smart show with a sweet yet sour approach. It takes a normal situation and remixes it with the most outrageous twist and exaggerating realistic emotions. This show could teach you a few lessons you probably never thought you needed to learn.
5. Broad City (2014)
This show chronicles two friends named Abbi and Ilana, who work minimum wage jobs, live in the Big Apple with annoying roommates and mediocre sex partners and are somehow able to tolerate it all.
Maybe it's because they smoke weed - like a lot of weed. But they also have casual hook ups and multiple sex partners without a shame to their name. Thus, the show embraces casual sex among women, which should have never been an issue in the first place. It's quirky, cute, and fun with a very 21st century twist on every situation they seem to get them selves into.
