If you do not have a lot of time, short films are a great cinematic platform that is often under- utilized by consumers. Yet, they make an exciting and equally as intriguing film as a feature length. They are great mediums to tackle social issues creatively, and as an outlet for creative means. Here are a few that may spark your interest:
1. "I’m Here" by Spike Jonze
Premiering at Sundance in 2010, this film depicts a world where humans and robots coexist. It follows the life of a robot named Sheldon, and his lover Francesca. I’m Here approaches romance, segregation and sacrifice, with a new lens through the audiences' empathy with two uncommon characters.
2. "Stutter" by Benjamin Cleary
A man with a speech impediment comes to terms with his vocalization issues, when he contemplates meeting the individual behind his online relationship. This short film has won an academy award, Irish Film & Television Academy award, and a whole list of others. It has also been shown worldwide, and is an intriguing short that tackles a new angle on online relationships.
3. "Billy Boys" by Fraser Rigg
This VIMEO Staff Pick, showcases the reality of 3D printed firearms. It illustrates how technology has changed the industry of weaponry, and the downfalls of such.
4. "Stop" by Reinaldo Marcus Green
Premiering at Sundance in 2015, this film highlights the issue of racial profiling in America, as a young boy is stopped during one of the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk searches. This, however, is juxtaposed by the film's ambiguous ending.
5. "Day One" by Henry Hughes
Winning a Narrative Gold Medal at the 42nd Student Academy Awards ceremony, and an Oscar nomination, this film highlights the turmoils of war and the imbalance of two cultures colliding. Day One was inspired by a true story, and depicts the journey of an Afghan- American woman, on her first day accompanying the American army unit. As they look for a terrorist in Afghanistan, she tries to fulfill her roles as a translator and contemplates the humanity at stake.
