When searching for musicals, you always find the same ones online. You always hear about Les Mis., Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, and now a days Hamilton. What about all the musicals that you don't automatically hear about? Here are five you must check out.
1. Dogfight
Based off of the 1991 Nancy Savoca film, Dogfight tells the story of a young group of Marines on their final night before being shipped off to Vietnam. Wanting to have a little fun, the group decides to hold a "dogfight", a competition where they all bet 50 bucks, and whomever can bring the ugliest girl to a party wins all the money. The musical focuses on Eddie Birdlace, who after finding a girl to take to the party, Rose Fenny, he discovers there is a lot more than money to this, and Rose changes his life forever. 2. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
We all grew up with the 1996 Disney film, but have you heard of the stage version? The latest adaptation ran at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey, and included multiple details that stayed true to Victor Hugo's original novel, including acknowledging that Quasimodo is deaf from the bell ringing and having him use American Sign Language, as well as keeping the novel's original ending, adding to the the darker parts of the story. Starring Michael Arden as the title role, the story follows Quasimodo trying to decide between doing what he is told and doing what is right, while learning the true meaning of friendships along the way. (The latest cast got an album as well, click here to check it out!)
3. Bare: A Pop Opera
Written by Jon Hartmere, Jr. and the late Damon Intrabartolo, the story centers around Peter Simmonds and Jason McConnell, two gay high school students and their struggles with coming to terms with their sexuality while attending a private Catholic boarding school. Bare portrays realistic issues facing LBGT teens including the struggle for acceptance in a conservative society and features a heart wrenching love story along the way. The show gives highly relatable characters and- coming from my experience in similar situations- this could be the perfect musical for everyone. (Click for Act 1 and Act 2 of the album.)
4. Daddy Long Legs
Based on Jean Webster's 1912 novel of the same name, Daddy Long Legs tells the story of orphan Jerusha Abbott and her anonymous benefactor who agrees to send her to college. She calls him "Daddy Long Legs" because all she has seen of him is his shadow, which looked like the spider. Upon following his conditions as the benefactor, Jerusha writes him a letter once a month telling him updates on her life. The benefactor, Jervis Pendleton, discovers more to life and falls in love with Jerusha along the way. Check out the album here!)
5. Twisted:The Untold Story Of A Royal Vizier
We all grew up with Aladdin, the 1992 Disney movie, but have you ever wondered why Jafar did all that he did? Written by Starkid Productions, Twisted tells the story of Aladdin but from Jafar's point of view. With a great book and score, Twisted makes you think of the true actions behind villain's decisions as you relate to the character. The story makes you understand why Jafar is corrupt, and you understand his story. (Click here to buy the album!)
