Some of the scariest things aren't monsters under the bed or evil beings lurking in the shadows, but the gruesome truth about the people and society we have become. Mumford and Sons is by far my favorite band for so many reasons. One of the biggest reasons I love their music is the connection they bring between people and their songs through the lyrics. They are brutally honest and eloquent. Some of the things I have noticed over the years of religiously listening to their music are revolutionary, and I just had to share it. I would also like to say that this is a reflection of the thought that comes to my mind, and some may feel different.
1. "My generation is stuck in the mirror"
This is the first line in their new single, "Blind Leading the Blind" When I first heard it, I was surprised they started the song so abruptly. However, it is so true. Everyone is worried about getting a perfectly posed picture for their Instagram. Image is everything yet nothing at all. No matter how great you make yourself look it won't matter when you're on your death bed. If you're so focused on yourself, you become blind to everyone and everything else around you. What's scary is to think about our generation and the ones after; will we ever get out of in front of the mirror?
2. "My words are empty vessels if I do nothing in this place."
This line is from their song "Delta." This speaks loud. If you talk about doing things but never do them, your words are meaningless. It takes courage to put yourself out there and say you are going to try to make the world better, but it takes even more courage to actually do it. It's a scary thought to think of all the words we have said that were empty or empty words told to us.
3. "Didn't they say that only love will win in the end"
This is a line from their song "Only Love." If, in the end, the only thing that wins is love, what about everything else? It's scary to wonder about all the time wasted. It's about the connections and meaningful relationships you make. It's about being loved and loving others. When you arrive at the end of your life, you won't look back and think about your Instagram likes. You'll think about the love you shared and the love you received.
4. "Where you invest your love, you invest your life"
This is from their song "Awake My Soul." Back again with the love thing? I feel like they talk about love being crucial to life in a lot of their songs. And that repetition is proof enough that there is something to it. I mean, if you think about it, it's so true. When you invest time in what you love, you also invest your life. What you love takes up a lot of your time and, therefore, your life. Just make sure whatever you spend the most time doing and putting effort into, its something you want to look back on be proud of.
5. "Wasted on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head"
This is a line from the song, "Little Lion Man" How many of our problems are actually problems? If you think about your issues and then realize that the problem is something rooted in some idea that isn't yours but the worlds, is it really a problem? Imagine how much time we waste stressing over problems that we made up. It's quite a scary thought.
Some of the scariest things in life don't have to be scary if you don't let them. Are you wasting your life? Are you stuck in the mirror? Are you investing your life in meaningful things? Sometimes when things like this are revealed, you have to check yourself and reevaluate where you are in life. Life is a crazy and short thing. I don't want to waste a second stuck in the mirror, saying meaningless things, and not loving those around me.
