There are many movies I could come up with that have great female characters but here are 5 of my favorite movies.
1. "Leon The Professional" (1994)
A 12-year-old girl, Mathilda is taken in by Leon the professional assassin, after her family is murdered. She learns how to be an assassin without actually killing anybody because according to Leon once you have, it changes you and he doesn’t want that for her. It is heartbreaking and action filled with a little bit of cuteness to warm your heart. Although Leon is a badass, my favorite character is Mathilda. Her style is amazing and she is a young girl who has been through a lot but still remains strong throughout the movie and becomes a little badass herself
2. "Sucker Punch" (2011)
This movie is full of badass female characters. A girl they call “Babydoll” in the movie is put in an institution by her abusive stepfather who is also the reasoning behind the death of her loved ones. The institution is not only a psych ward but it runs a business underground. Babydoll meets four other women Rocket, Blondie, Amber and Sweet Pea who plan to escape the institution. In the movie Baby doll often enters a fantasy world every time she dances. In the fantasy world, the girls face battles that metaphorically tells them how to survive in their reality. The movie has awesome action scenes in the fantasy worlds but also heartbreaking scenes in the girl’s reality. My favorite thing about this movie is the thought that went behind it, the metaphors hidden in it and of course the awesome female characters.
3. "Heathers" (1988)
Veronica is a part of the popular clique at her high school who all go by the name of “Heather”. She doesn’t like how cruel they can be to the other students at their school and so she is drawn to the mystery guy, J.D., who becomes her boyfriend. You learn J.D. is a sociopath and causes Veronica to accidentally poison one of the Heathers during what was supposed to be a simple prank. Veronica then realizes that J.D. has been intentionally killing students that were on his hit list and rises to stop him. Veronica becomes really strong in the movie and fights for the students against J.D. and shows that she isn’t scared of him
4. "Beautiful Creatures" (2013)
I recently watched this movie and really liked the females in this movie. Ethan Wate lives in the small town of Gatlin, S.C. and everything seems plain until he meets the new girl Lena Duchannes who has supernatural powers and a curse beyond her control. The curse is on her 16th birthday in which she will either claim light or go dark and she won’t have control of which force will claim her. I like Lena Duchannes because of her compassion but I also like her cousin Ridley Duchannes who was once in the same boat as Lena but was claimed dark. It is an interesting concept and who doesn’t love awesome females with supernatural powers?
5. "Big Eyes" (2014)
This movie is a true story about a woman named Margaret Keane who was an artist in the late 1950’s and early 60’s. Margaret’s husband Walter Keane becomes famous for these big-eyed portraits but Margaret is the one painting them, while her husband takes the credit. Margaret’s husband convinced her that nobody would believe she painted those portraits because she was a woman. For a while, Margaret went with it and just enjoyed that her paintings were being shown even though they didn’t have her name. Then after realizing who the man she married was, she begins to fight for her paintings and a lawsuit follows. The truth finally comes out and Margret Keane is now the known painter of the big-eyed children. I thought Margret Keane was an amazing woman, her paintings are beautiful and she is a great role model.
All of these women are fighting something in their own ways. They are all strong and beautiful female characters. These movies are all amazing and worth the watch.
