Confession time: I'm a huge scaredy-cat. I'm the kind of girl who watches something freaky and hides behind a pillow or grabs your arm so tight you go numb. On the same token, I know that being scared can be fun and October is the best time to indulge in that feeling. With some advice from my horror-genre nerd friends, here's a list of 5 movies that are sure to fright and delight this Halloween!

1. Hush

Home invasion horror movies are always terrifying because they play on one of our most ingrained fears: that even our home is not safe. Hush utilizes constant, low-grade suspense punctuated by jump scares that will have you double checking all your doors and windows. If you're tired of the same old same old that this subgenre sometimes offers, Hush gives you plot with a dark twist: the main character is deaf, unable to hear her attacker hunting her within her home.

2. The Babadook

The Babadook is a classic monster movie with a couple tricks hidden up its sleeve. Summoned from a child's book, The Babadook is a creature that terrorizes a single mother and her son. Based on the 2005 short film Monster, this is a movie that layers the stark realism of a fractured family with the fear of what that stress can do to a person. The suspense is a slow but unrelenting build that will send your heart racing every time you see a tall, dark figure in the doorway. Be careful when you watch though: if it's in a word or its in a look, you can't get rid of The Babadook.

3. Creep

Creep is a movie that will make you never respond to a Craigslist ad again. Utilizing the method of 'found footage' (made popular by The Blair Witch project), Creep is a psychological thriller that terrifies viewers without needing to punctuate each scene with heavy gore and violence. Take a photographer, a creepy client with some bizarre secrets, and a wtf-esquedog mask and you're gonna be asking yourself if that cool couch you found on Craigslist is even worth it.

4. Let The Right One In

Now, Let The Right One In has been out since 2008, but if you've somehow ignored the hype (from both fans and critics), this Halloween is the time to check it out. Both of the main characters are played by young children (they're 11 - when I could barely write my name in cursive), but they both deliver intense performances far beyond their age. Released first in Sweden (watch this one), then remade in the U.S. (not this one), this movie takes a vampire story and gives it a dark, romantic twist that will make you forget you even heard the word Twilight.

5. The Witch (stylized as The VVitch)

We've all heard the story of the Salem Witch Trials and the hyper-religious lifestyles that caused the 'witch panic' in the 17th and 18th centuries. Well, forget your history books because The Witch is a movie that grabs you by the throat and never lets up. Centered around a Puritan family threatened with banishment, a father moves his family into the woods and, unknowingly, into the heart of what they all fear the most. With a breakout performance by Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch shows that some witches are far more gruesome than little old ladies with broomsticks.

Alright guys, warm up some apple cider and get ready to lose some sleep. Happy Halloween!

The Battle Between College And My Mental Health

College isn't easy, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it at the rate my mental health is going.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
