As the last glimmer of summer recedes with each passing second, minute, hour, and day. Slowing to a flickering halt like the reel of rolling camera as the light shining through its lens retreats back behind it --even as un-dimming lights along the walls expose empty chairs, leftover popcorn, and an empty theater. Empty they remain -- the floors, the chairs -- barren, like branches bereft of leaves eagerly fluttering away to populate the ground. Even as students go from populating intern desks at Goldman Sachs, beach cabins at Cape Cod, restocking shelves with t-shirts and jeans at a minimum wage retail job, to populating lecture halls and libraries -- and the floors and chairs within them.
As reels begin unwinding in theaters before audiences whose numbers continue to dwindle as fall approaches, here are five films to catch while making use of the extra space:
1. "Mission: Impossible -- Fallout"

The sixth installment in the "Mission: Impossible" Franchise, "Mission: Impossible -- Fallout" wasted no time in replicating and eclipsing the success if its past predecessors, many of which, have been leaving a lasting mark on the film industry since 1996. Drawing widespread acclaim for its direction, acting, action sequences and stunts, and its strong emphasis on character development -- an element that has been slowly injected with heavier doses with the progression of the franchise -- prominent critics and buffs alike have been as bold as to proclaim it one of "the greatest action films of all-time". Certainly a worthy pick for those seeking to end their summer on an ecstatic, cardiac pounding note.
2. "Incredibles 2"

Grossing $182.7 million on its opening weekend, "Incredibles 2" set the record for best box office debut for any animated film before moving on to gross $1 billion worldwide, and becoming the third highest grossing animated film of all-time. Although many critics felt the sequel failed to live up to its previous instalment, the film holds a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, with "Incredibles 2" receiving praise for its progressive narrative, throwback aesthetics, and its ability to retain a high level of humor as expected of a family comedy of the utmost quality.
3. "BlacKkKlansman"

Spike Lee's back, and he's fightin' the power harder, and stronger than he ever has with this biopic based off a book of the same name written by Ron Stallworth -- an African American detective who attempts to infiltrate, and expose a local chapter of the Klu Klux Klan. Opening in theaters on August 18, 2018, one year after the infamous, and widely publicized white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, "BlacKkKlansman" has been praised for its timely examination of racism, and as a return to form for Lee back reminiscent of the days of "Do the Right Thing". Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the Grand Prix prize, Spike Lee's latest brainchild is sure to be a strong candidate for the Oscars this year.
4. "Antman & the Wasp"

The Marvel Cinematic Universe hit it our if the park with "Avengers: Infinity War" as they have done with all their films, and the home runs just keep coming while the ball remains in the stands, "Antman & the Wasp" is just the latest one to cross the plate. Becoming the tenth highest grossing film of 2018, the "Antman" sequel received equally, if not overwhelmingly, as much acclaim as its inaugural film, attracting commendations for its seemingly effortless levity, humor, and acting -- particularly delivered on the part of the acting duo between Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly. For those unable to get over the hangover of "Infinity War", "Antman & the Wasp" will prove a suitable high back into Marvelmania.
5. "The Happytime Murders"

First, someone tried an adult animated film, and now Hollywood has decided it wants to do the same with puppets, and the slogan says it all: "No Sesame. All Street". Combining sex, drugs, and murder-mystery with all the trash talk and sleeziness you wouldn't even find in your football team's locker room, "The Happytime Murders" seems poised to take the theaters by force. And even if it doesn't, this new take on a sesame-less street should make for one of the more interesting viewings to round out the summer -- for better, or for worse.
Although theaters may seem scarce for people as summer dwindles down to its last breath, scarce for entertainment they are not. With plenty of quality movies to keep one occupied, even as the chairs and floors hardly remain so.
