5 Movies That Define The Millennial Experience
millennial movies

From career choices to finding love, each generation faces challenges unique to its time. The millennials are no different. The group sandwiches people born as early as 1982 to as young as 2000, and while the two decades in themselves are very different, the collection of shared references and markers serve as a secondary language, and our experiences have been unique yet similar. To this effect, Hollywood for long has tried to capture this nebulous time with varying degrees of success. Very few movies have gotten it right.

Here are five movies that capture the essence of the millennial generation:

1. 'Tiny Furniture'

Directed by millennial icon Lena Dunham, the movie captures the hopelessness in trying to figure out what to do straight out of college. Dunham is a struggling Film Studies major living in her mother’s house, desperate to spread her wings and march on her way to greatness, one YouTube video at a time.

2. 'St. Elmo’s fire'

An 80’s classic, St. Elmo’s fire explores the lives of a group of friends as they try to find their way into the world after college battling through love, abuse, alcohol and drugs. The clothes and music may feel a little too 80’s for some, but their search for love, acceptance and jobs is timeless.

3. 'Adventureland'

Jesse Eisenberg is an Oberlin grad who settles for a job in a local amusement park after his parents disclose financial troubles, having to cancel his travel plans to Europe and put his grad school plans on hold. The movie explores how the reality of our finances often becomes obstacles for our dreams.

4. 'V for Vendetta'

A dystopian political thriller set in a neo-fascist regime, the movie follows an anarchist freedom fighter who goes by the name of ‘V’. The movie is widely popular as an allegory of government oppression and is a brand that political groups have used to protest tyranny. The movie is more relatable with real-life parallels that we can identify with.

5. 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'

By far, the most unorthodox romantic comedy-dramas ever, and yet the most relatable, an estranged couple meet after having successfully removed each other from their memories after their relationship turns sour. The movie explores the nature of selective memory and romantic love. Its twisted and thrilling, but it's a heartfelt take on relationships and heartache is compelling.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
