As many of you probably know from the majority of the articles that I have written so far, I am a huge movie guy; and the year of 2015 for movies was fantastic with the release of "Jurassic World," "Mad Max: Fury Road," "Hateful Eight," "Creed," "Southpaw," and of course "Star Wars." The year of 2015 was a huge year for non-traditional movies to come into the spotlight, mainly "Beasts of No Nation" the new Netflix exclusive movie that was done by Cary Fukunaga. The new year is looking to improve upon the 2015 slate in almost every way, with the release of "Batman v. Superman," "Captain America: Civil War," "Deadpool, X-Men Apocalypse," "The Magnificent Seven," a live action "Jungle Book," and even "Finding Dory." With all of this being said, here is a list of the top five movies that you should see before the 2016 year truly begins and we all have to go back to school again.
5. "Sisters"
I actually just recently watched this movie myself, but let me say that it is well worth the watch if you are a fan of having joy in your life or interested in what your future might hold with your old friend group from high school or college. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler absolutely kill it in this comedy about two grown-up sisters who decide to relive their high school days one final time before their childhood home is sold away for good. And not only is Tina Fey and Amy funny in this movie, their supporting cast of characters from SNL, both new and old, help to bring a energy and realistic cadence to this film that I just don't think would be possible from another group of people. Plus you get to see a bunch of 40-year-olds act like they can party like college kids. (What more can you want right?)
4. "Beasts of No Nation"
I recommend this for two very specific reasons. First it is Cary Fukunaga (the original director of "True Detective") directing Idris Elba in a movie about child soldiers in Africa, which just screams emotion and huge character moments from Idris Elba. Second of all, it is the first exclusive movie that Netflix has created and it is definitely worth the watch to see what the future of this company truly shaping out to be.
3. "Mad Max: Fury Road"
I cannot recommend this movie enough to anybody who has not had the chance to see the film yet. It is a continuation of the character story that George Miller first started with Max back in 1979. Tom Hardy does a decent job of portraying Max within this film although the true focus of this story is on Charlize Theron's Furiousa and the journey that she takes throughout this desert wasteland. This movie is first off a visual thrill ride for anybody that takes the chance to watch it and although there are some slight issues with the plot within this movie—the use of Max within the film overall was fantastic in my opinion and I cannot wait to see where George Miller takes the series next.
2. "SouthPaw"
This movie overall was one of my favorite films of the year, especially in terms of the acting that was shown and the story that Antoine Fuqua was able to bring forth from these characters. Fuqua was able to create a tragic and engaging story that instead of being a boxing movie was a fall from grace and redemption story that happened to involve a boxer. Which was an incredible feat to witness and visualize on the screen. Also the acting that was done by Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, and Rachel McAdams was phenomenal on all points especially Jake Gyllenhaal's journey throughout the film. Also you have to give credit to the amazing soundtrack and atmosphere that Eminem was able to set up in this film.
1. "Star Wars Episode 7 The Force Awakens"
Of course everybody knew that this one was coming. What is easily starting to be one of the highest grossing films of all time, already surpassing "Jurassic World" and "Titanic" within the past few days and projected to pass "Avatar" within the next few days. The new start for the Star Wars universe is looking to be one of the most popular movies of our entire generation. At this time I cannot say anything about Star Wars that hasn't already been said by somebody else, except if you have't seen it already what are you waiting on?
