When I was a fifteen year old girl and my first year of high school was speeding towards me faster then a zit appeared on my face, my mom put a DVD in my hands and told me to watch it. I tossed it to the side and continued binging the show Gossip Girl but later that night when my mom told me that she would buy me Chipotle if I watched the DVD with her, I agreed. That DVD was the movie The Breakfast Club. It was the perfect thing to watch before high school and despite the fact it was made many years ago, it was still extremely relevant. That's the thing, even though the times change, humans mainly remain the same. We struggle with relationships, jobs, feeling insecure and scared of the future. So while you might not want to listen to your parents, maybe you will listen to me and watch these movies. I promise, you won't regret it!
The Breakfast Club
An athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal... You have probably heard this line before from your parents, watched the movie yourself, or even heard it in the quick cameo in"Pitch Perfect". Whatever it is, this line and movie is a staple for every high school student. The movie follows five high school students all from different places in the social structure, placed in Saturday morning detention for various reasons. It teaches many things like branching out from your social clique and that not everyone is exactly who you think they are. Even if that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, the movie features an iconic dance sequence and a scene where the characters get high off of weed hidden in a locker. You know, normal high school stuff.
Better Off Dead
Probably the weirdest on this list, Better Off Dead is a wacky and humorous movie that you will most likely question throughout it's entirety. The movie's charm completely relies on this sense of oddball humor, especially the two minute scene where clay hamburgers dance and sing to Van Halen's "Everybody Wants Some!!". While there is not much of an actual plot to it, there are some valuable lessons. For example, never owe the paperboy two dollars, or he will chase you down a snowy embankment. It's different, but it's fun.
Pretty in Pink
This movie makes the list because of one thing, DUCKIE. Who doesn't love the fun, quirky underdog? Pretty in Pink is a cute movie to watch on a girls' movie night with popcorn, drinks and of course, your preferred candy. While maybe not the best on this list, it does have the quintessential 80's prom scene full of permed hair and puffy sleeves. Who can resist that?
Heathers
Loved for its dark humor and social satire, Heathers is the story of a teen girl who falls in love with a boy. The difference between this movie and the countless others is that this boy is a psychopathic murderer who begins killing off the students in their high school. The movie is shockingly hilarious and filled with probably some of the best quotes in movie history, ie "I love my dead gay son". You won't find any cute romances or prom scenes in this one but if you are looking for something different, you have the right movie here. It is also now a successful musical as well as a new tv show! You should definitely watch it and if not... well in the words of Veronica Sawyer, "Whats your damage?"
The Rocky Horror Picture ShowÂ
Remember when I said Better Off Dead was the weirdest one on this list? Well, I maybe lied. In this cult classic, two young fiancees are stuck in a storm and must enter the mansion of a transvestite scientist. In the mansion they meet lots of crazy characters and sing and dance to some great bops. There is also something with aliens... but let's just not focus to hard on that part. You will probably be confused, honestly I still am when I watch it, but that's just part of the experience. This one also had a recent reboot with Victoria Justice, but please PLEASE watch the original first. Nothing gets better then Tim Curry dancing and singing in his red lipstick and fishnet stockings.
You don't have to love these movies, not everyone does. But not giving them a chance is something you really shouldn't do, especially just because your parents want you to watch them. I now thank my mom and anyone else over the age of forty who made me watch some of these films because my life would be different without them! So give it a try, you will never know what you end up loving.
