How could you not love the stories in which spontaneously breaking into song is normal?

5 Must-See Movie Musicals
The Schleicher Spin

Whenever I watch a movie, I think, "Wow, there's nothing better than movies." Then I go see a musical, and I think, "Wow, there's nothing better than musicals." Well, someone somewhere was listening to everyone who has ever said these things, and he or she accepted that challenge and developed the movie musical.

Nothing compares to the live stage show, but there's something about your favorite stars playing timeless characters on the screen and leading your obnoxious sing-a-longs with friends that just makes everything in the world better.

While all movie musicals are worth the watch, these are just a few that you could put on a loop in front of me, and you'd lose me until the end of time.

5. Mamma Mia

"Mamma Mia, here I go again. My, my. How can I resist ya?"

Plot Breakdown: Sophie is getting married, and all she wants is for her father to walk her down the aisle. The only problem: she has no idea who her father is. When she finds her mom's old diary, she discovers there are three possible candidates. She invites them all behind her mother's back, and the result is heartfelt hilarity and revelations for everyone involved.

What to Love: What's not to love?! If Meryl Streep plus Amanda Seyfried plus an ABBA soundtrack doesn't equal the perfect movie musical, then I don't know what could! Classic tunes like "Mamma Mia," "Honey Honey," and "Dancing Queen" make it fun for people of all ages to sing along. And if you've seen it, you'll always remember the "Lay All Your Love on Me" number that was just about the most scandalous thing a twelve-year-old could bear. And while younger ears can live in blissful ignorance of all of Julie Walter's priceless euphemisms, the mature audience will catch on laugh till it hurts for the full hour and forty-nine minutes.

Awkward Casting: There's always one, isn't there? Pierce Brosnan just does not do it for me in this movie. I mean, nothing can ever— and I mean ever— top the discomfort caused by Russel Crowe's vocal attempt in "Les Miserables" (the title is fitting), but it's getting there. If you close your eyes during Brosnan's songs, you can just almost picture him singing while simultaneously using the bathroom. And raise your hand if you cringed at his lyric about not being too old for sex!!! *Shoulder pops out of socket from raising hand too high.*

But not even Pierce Brosnan's voice could shatter this film. I will recommend this movie to anyone who loves the stage show, or who is just looking to smile, laugh, and be reminded about the power of a family's love and dreams through some awesome music, fit for any dancing queen.

4. La La Land

"City of stars, are you shining just for me?"

Plot Breakdown: Mia and Sebastian both want to make it big in Los Angeles. When they meet and share an undeniable connection, they vow to both achieve their dreams and hold onto love. But is that a promises that only belongs in La La Land?

What to Love: Two things: Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The dynamic duo couple of our generation. These two have amazing talent, and when you mix effortless talent with great chemistry, it becomes art. This film captures the struggle of anybody trying to be somebody in LA. The singing and dancing on both their parts and co-star John Legend's part takes you to your own kind of la la land. The original score is breathtaking, and the plot is just an emotional rollercoaster that puts hearts and stars in the eyes of anyone who has ever daydreamed about giving their future acceptance speech. Stone said it herself as she won her Golden Globe for Best Actress: "This is a film for dreamers."

Fun Fact: According to Lisa Respers France of CNN, this film received fourteen Oscar nominations, putting them in a record-breaking tie for most nominations for a single film alongside "Titanic" and "All About Eve."

3. The Sound Of Music

"How do you solve a problem like Maria?"

Plot Breakdown: Julie Andrews plays the part of Maria, a nun who is sent to look after the children of widower Georg von Trapp. While cold towards her at first, the family, including Captain von Trapp, begins to warm up to Maria. But while love grows inside their Austrian home, hate in the form of Nazi Germany is strengthening its power over surrounding countries, including the von Trapp's.

What to Love: This film is a truly beautiful and timeless experience for all generations, and I assume it will still be for generations to come. The juxtaposition of love and hate in an unsettling chapter of history is enhanced with song. For those of you who thought this film could not be more inspiring, it's based on the life events of the real von Trapp family. It sends a powerful message about how love of a family, no matter how unexpected, can in some cases conquer hate and violence. Songs like "Do-Re-Mi" and "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" will stay in your head once you hear them, and the von Trapp children are honestly "singing family goals."

Showstopper: The first time I saw a movie with Julie Andrews was when I watched "The Princess Diaries." My mom gushed over how beautiful of a voice she had, and I didn't understand until I saw "The Sound of Music." If I didn't know any better, I'd say "The Princess Diaries" was a true story as well, because Julie Andrews truly is a queen. Her talent, beauty, and grace is what puts the finishing touches on this movie as a classic. She remains a symbol of true beauty, inner and outer, in our pop culture today— and when you watch this film, you can't help but agree.

2. Hairspray

"Ever since this old world began, a woman found out if she shook it she could shake up a man."

Plot Breakdown: In the 60s, Tracy Turnblad loves to dance and sing, and she knows she belongs on the Corny Collins Show, where all the cool kids in school show off their moves. Tracy just doesn't fit the thin, perfect mold the show usually portrays. However, when she proves herself and earns a spot on the show anyway, she learns how the television world discriminates based not only on shape and size, but on skin color as well.

What to love: Say what you want about this movie; I love it! It's so much fun! The colorful costumes, the big hair, and the foot-tappin' music are all infectious. Newcomer Nikki Blonsky and Hollywood staples James Marsden, Queen Latifah, and Zac Efron among others put on great performances! I still have my Link Larkin calendar stored in the back of my closet, (and I have no shame admitting that to the world; he's a dreamboat). I must, however, warn you about John Travolta as Edna Turnblad. He can join Russell Crowe and Pierce Brosnan's support group... Still, it's only after getting older that I've truly learned to appreciate the story of "Hairspray." It proves to us that talent, music, and friendship are color blind, even when the people put in charge of deciding who is talented are not. It's been ten years since this film came out, but we could learn a thing or two today by watching it again.

Underrated Track: "Ladies' Choice." Zac Efron slays this song, and as a child I sang it non-stop. If only I knew what it meant. I urge you break through the hypnosis induced by all of Efron's gyrating and listen to the lyrics, because oh my stars! I deem this the moment Zac Efron really began to shed his pure and innocent Troy Bolton reputation. *Fans self just thinking about it.*

1. Rock Of Ages

"I love Rock 'n' Roll, so put another dime in the jukebox, baby."

Plot Breakdown: Country girl Sherrie moves to LA to pursue her dream of being a singer, and she gets a job waitressing at the infamous Rock 'n' Roll club, The Bourbon Room. She meets bartender and fellow aspiring rocker Drew, and together with their friends they fight to save the club that is the one place where their Rock N' Roll dreams will always live on.

What to Love: These movies are in no particular order, but this is my number one favorite movie musical. One thing to love is the star-studded cast. Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, and Tom Cruise all took my jaw and dropped it on the floor. I didn't even know half of them could sing, and I will tell you now: boy, can they sing. Another thing to love is what they're singing. The entire musical is built around a soundtrack of all the classic 80s rock songs. There's "Don't Stop Believing," "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," "Wanted Dead or Alive," and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," to name a few of the greats. I bought the soundtrack and listened to only that for months on end after seeing this movie. If when you watch this movie you're not singing, headbanging, and strumming your air guitar, I suggest you pause and take a trip to the nearest emergency room.

Showstopper: No, you didn't read it wrong; I meant to write Tom Cruise! Tom Cruise plays rock-god Stacey Jaxx in the film, an aloof, drunken, kind of sad rocker. If you told me before I watched that it was Tom Cruise who played the part, I'd laugh in your face. But if you try to tell me now after having watched it several hundred times that anyone other than Tom Cruise should have played the part, I'd punch you in your face. He's surprisingly incredible. Supposedly he was so self-conscious about his singing that he practiced every day for months before filming. Well Tom, it paid off.

Now go forth, watch these movies, and sing and dance until you can't anymore. These are only five out of hundreds of amazing movie musicals that will have you itching to see (or wishing that there were) stage versions. If your favorite wasn't listed here, comment below and tell us what you love about it!

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
