5 Methods to Fight a Lack of Motivation

Winter can be a difficult time for everyone. Lack of sunlight and blistery winds take a toll on our bodies throughout the day. You may find yourself lagging half way through your day or you may find that by the time you find time for yourself you are facing a serious lack of motivation. I've complied these 5 methods to help fight past that exhausted fog that keeps you from fully enjoying each day.

1.) Don't try to force your hobbies if they begin to cause stress.

Sometimes it's important to simply take a step back from the thing that's causing you stress. If you are feeling overwhelmed at being unable to keep up with a hobby it's okay to take a step back and focus on something else. Sometimes it's better to take a break rather than to find yourself disenchanted with something you'd otherwise enjoy.

2.) Make sure you are meeting all your own basic needs.

It's impossible to give your attention to much of anything if you aren't caring for yourself. Make sure that you are getting enough sleep, eating an appropriate amount of food, and drinking plenty of water. Physical health and mental health go hand in hand.

3.) Do something out of your comfort zone.

Sometimes all you need to do is shock yourself! Anxiety can be a very healthy thing to experience in certain circumstances. Try something different that makes you nervous or takes courage. Once you've done this normal task will see more manageable.

4.) Address any lingering issues.

If there's something specific bothering you this is a good time to confront it. Make a list of things you need to accomplish in order to resolve in. Plan and schedule when you are going to do each item on your list. Breaking down big task into small ones makes them more manageable and less intimidating.

5.) Just do it.

Sometimes when all else fails you must push through! If you are simply dreading completing an assignment all you can do is to simply complete it even if it's not to the best of your ability. With time it will get easier and less stressful.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
