I have now been in a relationship for almost 2 years, a committed unwavering relationship. Those that know me know that this is particularly unusual for me, but when I found my girlfriend, as time went on, I knew I had found love. Being disabled and trying to have a successful relationship can be trying at times, because there were times when I can't help but ask my partner to help me do something that a usual care attendant would do. Lucky for me, she does it with a smile on her face and is vocal when she is not comfortable with doing something that I asked. I never hold it against her, as I understand that she is my significant other and not my care attendant. She has been my smile, my cheerleader and my support her through this almost 2 years.
Here are five things that I have learned while being in this relationship and I am thankful for all the lessons she continues to bestow upon me, unknowingly.
1. It Is Okay to Let Your Hair Down
With work, the demands of life and constantly doing something, I had to remember that it was okay to let my hair down. It was okay to have fun, laugh, smile and love. Whether it's a silly face, a crazy gesture or just simply cracking jokes, it has to be done.
2. I Am Not Alone
There are moments when I have to remember that I'm not alone. I have someone to be my cheerleader, my shoulder to cry on and my supporter through the good and bad times. There are times where I shut down and don't know how to voice what is wrong, but I will always remember that I'm not alone.
3. She Loves Me
While I may feel like I have inconsistencies, flaws and other problems, she always reminds me that I am loved. I can never get enough of it and I will never forget it.
4. She Is the Best Part of Me
Where I lack, she picks up. She is the parts of me that I cannot always see.
5. Happiness Is Allowed
The crazy way we laugh, the jokes that we play and the secret moments that we have are all allowed. The light she brings to a room, the smile she brings to my face, it is all allowed and it makes my life so much better.
I have been through the world of online dating, long-distance relationships and broken hearts. With all that being said, I'm so glad that I found someone that trumps all of that. Thank you for everything that you are and what you will continue to be.
