I'm not usually one for TV watching, especially in college. I rarely have time for it, and when I do have free time, I'm try using my time wisely by sneaking in a quick nap. I think the last time I watched a full season show would have to be my high school freshman year, filled with the classic "Glee" and "Gossip Girl."
One recent show that has seemed to touch my heart and create waterfalls out my eyes is NBC's "This Is Us." If you're not familiar with the show, it follows a rather irregular family situation filled with climax and resolution. This feel-good drama not only has the audience at their feet, but has also managed to portray some pretty important life lessons.
1. There is always someone there when you're at your lowest
While everyone is going through their own problems, it's important to know that there are people in your life who would drop what they're doing to come comfort you, just like Kevin missed his opening night show to save his brother. Always be willing to open up and talk to that person and ask for help when you truly need it.
2. Enjoy the NOW
Possibly my favorite character of the show, William is a wise old man who enjoys the present every second he is alive. Take a break, look around, and appreciate every detail. Take in all the laughter, memories, and tears. It's important to be able to look back and see how much you've conquered.
3. Don't be afraid to take a risk
Waiting for "the right time" in bogus. There is no better right time than the time you have now. Take a leap like Kevin did by showing up and expressing how you really feel. Better to know than to think "what if?"
4. It's okay to break tradition
Everyone has probably encountered a situation where the familiar suddenly turns into something new. Don't be afraid of change; rather, embrace it and turn the unfamiliar into the new familiar.
5. Anything is possible to work through
From relationships to friendships to family, sticky situations are hard to avoid completely. Take a breath, work together, and take action. Anything is possible to work through. That is, as long as you are willing to try.
