I've recently had the unique experience of moving back home for the summer in between the spring and fall semesters. While this may be a common occurrence for anyone going to school outside of a major city, for me, it's been quite the transition. I haven't actually lived at home for almost two years. In that time I became accustomed to the things that New Yorkers take for granted. Being at home has forced me to appreciate some things about New York more than I ever did before. While moving from New York City to the suburbs of Long Island isn't geographically the biggest move, in every other way it's been a huge change. Even though I may not love it all the time, I've definitely learned a lot about being a New Yorker through being away from the city. Maybe next time there is a subway delay I won't immediately start complaining about how much I hate the MTA. Maybe.
1. I Appreciate the Business of Day-to-Day Life
Sometimes New Yorkers get cranky about how busy they are everyday or how crowded the city is or how everyone is in a rush. I'm guilty of it too. However, here on Long Island I am B-O-R-E-D. Honestly, other than work there is really nothing to do as compared to the city. I find myself sleeping days away out of sheer boredom. Next time I think about complaining about my crazy New York college kid schedule, I'll think twice.
2. I Miss Public Transportation
I know the MTA is a wreck. But I will take our slightly messy subway system over the complete lack of public transportation found here in the suburbs. The biggest reason I am so bored is because I can't go anywhere. Unfortunately, I moved to the city straight out of High School and never quite got my license. I am once again bound to my parents driving me around. I didn't realize how much that sucked until now. Take it from me, the MTA is not that bad.
3. I Love My Mom's Cooking
One of the good things about moving back home is that I have my mom's cooking back. While I do like cooking, I hate spending money on food and I really hate having to clean up after. Moving back home, I really appreciate having home cooked dinners every night. Next time you go home, make sure to thank your mom for cooking. Maybe even do the dishes.
