As Valentine’s Day approaches, I’ve revisited some of my favorite romantic comedies that never get old, no matter how old they are, like our first love. Beware of spoilers!
5. Failure to Launch (2006)
Sometimes we all need just a ‘little’ push, whether it is to try something new or to try to be more independent (or less reliant on our parents). That’s exactly what Tripp (Matthew McConaughey) needs, a ‘push’ from a hired “interventionist,” Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker). Her assignment is to fall in love with him and take him through her course of becoming an independent man. Easier said, than done.
4. The Proposal (2009)
As a plan to not get deported because of her expired visa, Margaret Tate (starring Sandra Bullock), an uptight boss, proposes to her employee, Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds), as a way to secure her stay in the U.S. Andrew agrees only on the basis of getting a raise. However, what started off as strictly a business compromise spins out to be more than just business.
3. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
On one end it started as a bet, on the other end it started as a topic for an article piece. Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey) makes a bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days. Andie Anderson makes a bet that she can make a guy fall in love with her and break up with him in 10 days. When paths cross, there can only be one winner.
2. 13 Going on 30 (2004)
Sometimes I wish I could see into the future for a day and see what my life would look like in a couple of years. Jenna Rink (Jennifer Garner) makes that wish at the age of 13: she wishes she could wake up the next day older, 17 years older to be exact. As a 30 year old, she tries to navigate through life, while falling in love with her best friend (from 17 years ago) at the age of 30. Let’s just say, maybe it’s a good thing we can’t wish into the future.
1. Bridget Jones Trilogy:
Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)
Bridget Jones’s Diary: The Edge of Reason (2004)
Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016)
This is a movie series that my mother and I will watch countless of times and still laugh as if we just watched it the first time. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is the most relatable character in a movie that I ever seen; with her quirky behavior it’s hard not to like her. She’s a hopeless romantic who falls in love with two guys, and she is stuck choosing who is her true love. Nothing is completely certain until the last chapter, Bridget Jones’s Baby.
No need to actually make plans to go out on Valentine's Day. Just grab the popcorn and the chocolate, find a comfortable seat on the couch, and watch these movies with your best friend or significant other by your side.
