As the semester draws to a close, finals are stacking up and the pressure is on. It can be overwhelming and sometimes it's hard to know where to start. Since this is my final semester at PSU, I thought I'd share some of the best things that have helped me during all of my finals throughout my time at school. And remember, you've got this!

1. Outlines Are Your Friend

As someone who used to write every paper last minute, I'm telling you this will make things so much easier. Outline your whole paper--thesis, in-text citations, important points, and your so what are all really helpful. If outlining isn't really your style for initially writing an essay but you're struggling with organization do a reverse outline! It's exactly as it sounds: just look at your paper and write out an outline on that. If something feels off this is an easier way to move information around and organize it better than before.

2. Utilize Your University's Writing Center

Again, for final papers, you can never be too careful. A day or two before your paper is due book a writing center appointment. During remote learning it's still up and running, at least at PSU, so make use of it! It'll help polish up your writing and the people who work there are amazing.

3. Focus on Your Trouble Areas

For exams, go through key concepts for the exam. Look at past exams, quizzes, etc. in order to see what will be on it. Take a longer time studying areas that aren't your strong suit. That way you aren't spending an excessive amount of time on areas that you already know pretty well.

4. Do Not Have A Last Minute Cram-Study Session

We have all been here. It happens. But I've come to the realization that sometimes a last-minute of cram-studying is sometimes more harmful than good. It may confuse you if this is your prime study time. Take time throughout the week to study. If you want to have a brief go-through before your exam that is okay! Just don't make it your primary study time.

5. Take Breaks

Most importantly, take breaks. Studying for hours on end without any breaks will not help you retain anything. Take a few breaks throughout the week leading up to your final to give yourself a well-needed break. Listen to some music, watch a show or a movie, have a hot chocolate break--anything is okay! As long as you're not overworking yourself. You can do it and you'll be okay! Give your mind a break when you need it because it isn't defeat--you're listening to yourself and what you need. And that matters, too.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
