For us, Thanksgiving means football and food. Don't get me wrong-- there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but I feel we may have skipped over the true meaning of thanksgiving.
In our day and age, we have so many reasons to be thankful. Hundreds of years ago when the pilgrims came, they had nothing. No football, no parades and no giant table of food. All they had was each other.
There is a story about the pilgrims having only 5 kernels of corn, which you can find HERE. It says that the pilgrims would start their meal with 5 kernels of corn to remind them of their troubles and how many had not survived up until that point. It also serves as a reminder of the 5 most important things they were thankful for.
My family has a tradition of going around the table and saying the 5 most important things they're thankful for. It's nice to see what your family loves and to celebrate and give thanks with them.
Here are my 5:
1. My family
2. Great friends
3. A roof over my head and food always on the table
4. The opportunity to get a college education
5. The love Christ showed us
When thanksgiving and the holidays comes around, it is hard to stay focused on being thankful l for what you have and not on what you want. This Thanksgiving, try having everyone say the 5 most important things they're thankful for, because we are so fortunate to have our families in this day and age.
