4 Issues We, The People, Need To Speak Up About More Often

There are many issues our country faces everyday, some that you see on the news and some that you don't. This is also a country that allows us to speak up and fight for what we want,we should be using that right to give a voice to the voiceless and solve issues we have been facing for decades. If you are passionate about an issue we face in this country, use your voice; you'll make a difference. These are some issues I believe deserve to be spoken about more.

1. Homelessness

17 out of every 10,000 people are homeless in the United States. 67% percent of these people are individuals and 33% are families. Many of these people are veterans, children escaping abusive homes, or disabled individuals unable to secure jobs. As an effort to decrease the number of homeless people in the country, the government has made efforts to criminalize the homeless population. Some of these efforts include restricting public areas in which sleeping or sitting are allowed and prohibiting begging.

2. Violence Against Minority Groups

Awfully, hate crimes are a norm in the United States. Hate crimes are violence motivated by the prejudice of race, religion, sexual orientation, and the like. According to the F.B.I, hate crimes hit a sixteen-year high in 2019. Common cases of hate crimes include, but are not limited to: the killings of transgender women of color, assault of LGBT couples, and innocent black men being killed because they looked like a threat. Since our country has a huge, growing, and diverse population, one would think that prejudice wouldn't be an issue at this point. Sadly, in this day and age, it's one of the largest issues we face.

3. Planned Parenthood Funding

Planned Parenthood is an organization that educates on sexual health and provides many services. Due to different cultural beliefs and prejudices against the organization, many are against Planned Parenthood. Protests occur outside of Planned Parenthood facilities to shame people that are going in. What people don't know, however, is that Planned Parenthood provides services for little to no cost. Without funding, those who cannot afford to receive help with things like prenatal health, STD testing, or birth control will be left with no other option.

4. The Child Welfare System

The child welfare system is often never spoken about. It wasn't until the Netflix docu-series, The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez, aired that light was shed on the system. More often than not, the system fails the children it watches. Foster children go into abusive homes and home visits aren't being conducted, which leads to children being harmed. Since this isn't an issue that affects the majority of people, no one really talks about it. The system that should be protecting the most vulnerable group of humans deserves more attention and reform.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
