5 Horror Movies You Should Watch This Halloween

It's just about that time to celebrate the horror genre.

Halloween is right around the corner. I had made plans to dress up as a serial killer, but I haven't bought my costume yet. I've been wisely using my time to study for my midterms...

Not really, I've been on Netflix this entire time trying to finish season 4 of Glee, and well, I'm almost there, I can gladly say—but I have not advanced on studying for my midterm. Procrastination! I just wish I could put one of those smiling emojis here so you guys could understand my pain.

However. Halloween. This is the perfect time to invite your friends over and try to scare them with your powerful assortment of scary movies—but if The Conjuring is part of your list, discard it. That movie wasn't good. (At least in my opinion.)

So, as a fanatic of horror movies, I decided to offer my horrorical—if that's even a word—knowledge of the horror world. Now, these movies are the ones I can say actually made me jump and stay up at night, or because they're so good I can't even spell their names for how excited I get. Probably you've heard some of them, probably you haven't, but enjoy them!

1. Evil Dead (2013)

Synopsis: Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.

This was the least gruesome GIF that I could find from the movie unless you would've wanted to see the gif of this girl (not of the girl above) being locked in the cellar and possessed. It was quite the image, let me say.

When I saw this movie with my dad in the middle of the afternoon, I was shaken to my bones. I remember it as a Sunday after church, and I was praying to God to not let any of those demons ever posses me.

Evil Dead balances a fine line between gruesome and horror. It pretty much has every aspect every movie about a demonic possession should have—a cabin in the woods, a book with markings that should be found horrifying instead of appealing, and messages saying to not mess with the book. The movie grasps you from the beginning, opening with this girl running through a forest as if she was running for her life, like if she was being the victim of some satanic cult—only to find out that she is also possessed.

2. Insidious (2010)

Synopsis: A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.

I believed that the Insidious franchise was going to open newly, unexplored realms (haha, get my pun?) of the horror world. The first Insidious movie, is by far, my favorite one of the entire franchise, and I feel like the movies have been downgrading in their...horror factor.

Insidious had me gripping the edges of the chair when I saw it. When I first saw the face of the Red-Faced demon, my heart leaped out of my chest. It was a fresh movie. I couldn't decipher what was going to happen afterward. Instead of wondering what was going to happen, I wondered if Dalton was going to make it out alive or if this demon would end up possessing him entirely. But, as the movie reaches its end, offering a satisfactory ending, we see that things are not as they seem, thus building a bridge for a sequel.

3. Planet Terror (2007)

Synopsis: After an experimental bio-weapon is released, turning thousands into zombie-like creatures, it's up to a rag-tag group of survivors to stop the infected and those behind its release.

There's nothing much I have to say about this movie, but kick-ass female characters fighting in a zombie apocalypse with guns and their sex-appeal? A wanna-be stand-up comedian who loses her leg and instead is modified with a gun as a leg? Um, can we just buy Domino's and watch it???

4. Scream (1996)

Synopsis:A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game.

Wes Craven is a master at horror films, and I believe Scream is one of his best masterpieces. Since the movie old-school, it doesn't disappoint if you are into the slasher genre with serial killers, where you can trust nobody because anybody could be the killer—unless they die, of course. BUT in this movie, you learn that the killer can come back alive.

If you like classics, Scream should be at the top of your Must-Watch List of horror movies for this Halloween.

5. Silent Hill (2006)

Synopsis: A woman, Rose, goes in search for her adopted daughter within the confines of a strange, desolate town called Silent Hill.

Haunted towns reign on the hierarchy of the horror genre, especially when the entity haunting a town is a little girl with a huge thirst for revenge and a companion that came from God knows where with a gigantic knife.

Silent Hill can blow your mind, taking unexpected twists and turns as Rose goes to this gloomy, ash-covered town in search of her missing daughter. I don't know what to say about this movie, except if you want to sleep, don't watch it.

Now, these movies are just a few of my favorites. If I wasn't on a time-shortage, I probably would've added five more. However, watching any of these could be a great excuse while you hold on tightly to your significant love while you are shivering in fear!

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
