For me, summer is a time to relax and decompress from all the stress of the school year. What better way to forget all the troubles of your life than with a mind-numbing rom-com? Now, not all romantic comedies are created equal - many have the exact same plot and yes, many have very overlapping casts. I'm not talking about those rom-coms. I'm talking about the painfully corny, how could you not see that coming, this-is-so-unrealistic rom-coms. The really bad rom-com is my favorite kind of rom-com. Here are five of my recommendations to kick off a relaxing summer of cringing at your computer screen. And lucky for you (and me) all but one of these films can be found on Netflix.
1. "Christmas Kiss"
I know it's June, but it's never too early to start watching bad Christmas romances. Christmas is my favorite time to watch horrible rom-coms that make little to no sense. This one stars Laura Breckenridge, who falls for her boss's boyfriend (Brendan Fehr) while decorating his apartment for a holiday party. As the two become closer, hijinks ensue.
2. "Bride and Prejudice"
If you like musicals, this one's for you. Loosely based on Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," "Bride and Prejudice" is a Bollywood musical about a family of four daughters and their necessary marriages. Alexis Bledel, who played Rory Gilmore makes a surprise appearance as Darcy's sister GiGi. Ashanti also performs. This one is sadly no longer on Netflix though.
3. "The Decoy Bride"
I know I promised really horrible romantic comedies, but this one is actually quite good. I only cringed about 30 times while watching it. It stars David Tennant, the 10th Doctor, and Kelly Macdonald, the voice of Merida. The two meet on the tiny island of Hegg in Scotland when Macdonald pretends to be Tennant's bride. They search for the real bride as chaos erupts.
4. "Chalet Girl"
This one probably has the most classic of romantic comedy storylines - rich boy falls for poor girl. The beautiful cast of Felicity Jones and Ed Westwick and the backdrop of a chalet in the Alps makes this one definitely worth trying.
5. "Timer"
"Timer" had me screaming at my television before the ending. It's probably the most unique rom-com out of these five. Oona (Emma Caufield) lives in a world where biotechnological implants count down the days until you meet your soulmate. With a timer that hasn't started counting yet, she'll try anything to find Mr. Right.
Try not to watch them all in one sitting.
Happy watching!
