About an hour away from Shenandoah National Park, Charlottesville is a prime location for hiking. Now that the weather is finally nice outside, take advantage of our location and try out a few of these local hikes.
1. Humpback
Humpback is a classic hike in the area that you must do before you graduate, preferably multiple times. Go for sunrise or sunset to see one of the most beautiful sights you'll ever see. Don't underestimate the uphill grade, but remember that it's only less than a mile. Expect to see lots of other hikers. The drive is about a half hour from grounds if you do not follow the GPS route that circumnavigates Skyline Drive.
2. White Oak Canyon/Cedar Run
Choose to do White Oak Canyon, Cedar Run, or both trails. Cedar Run is a steeper grade for about two miles that is moderately challenging. When we went, we hiked up Cedar Run and down White Oak Canyon, which is about eight miles total. You'll see some of the most spectacular waterfalls in Shenandoah, and if it's warm outside, you'll have the opportunity to take a dip in many of the swimming holes. Score. Find more info here and prepare for about an hour-long drive.
3. Mary's Rock
Like Cedar Run/White Oak Canyon, this hike can be broken into two hikes or done as one loop and has an elevation gain of 2,600 feet. It's a pretty difficult hike if you do the one loop option at nine miles, but the views are incredible! Your drive from grounds is about an hour and 15 minutes. For more info, click here.
4. Hawksbill
Choose Hawksbill for some of the best views in the Shenandoah. At 5 1/2 hours with a half hour for lunch and the total mileage at around 9 miles, it will definitely be a day hike. The summit will be crowded, but your ascent will be worth it to get the feeling that you're on top of the world. You'll get stellar views of Old Rag and the surrounding area!
5. Old Rag
If you go during season, Old Rag is bound to be crowded, since it is one of the most popular hikes in the mid-Atlantic region. It has panoramic views and a difficult rock scramble at the top. If you can, try to go during the week to avoid the crowds. Your drive will be about an hour and 20 minutes from grounds. If you only do one day hike this spring, this should be the one!
I hope you enjoy these hikes near Charlottesville and the surrounding areas. Happy hiking!
