Tallahassee is home to many famous spots, from the one and only Doak Campbell Stadium to Gordo's Cuban Cuisine. However, if you're feeling down to adventure in or around 'Nole territory, here are a few spots you need to check out!
(Note: I did say in or around Tallahassee)
1. Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park

If you're looking for a spot to hike, run, or walk, Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park is definitely for you. With creeks, streams, mini waterfalls, and swamps throughout the never-ending mile trails, this park will surely give you a place to spend a majority of your day. If you enjoy hanging your eno up in the woods, there are plenty of trees to satisfy your needs. After you pull in, don't mind the fact that there's a couple of baseball fields at the entrance (I did say it was a hidden gem, didn't I?), just find the trail starting point and you'll be good to go!
2. Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park

Okay, I guess I wouldn't consider this a "hidden" gem, because if you drive down Thomasville Road at some point you are bound to see it. Whatever the case may be, it is definitely under appreciated. For just a few dollars you have the opportunity to walk around these gardens and visit the reflection pond, lake, and the actual historical Maclay house! Try to go during blooming season and I promise you will see colors beyond your own belief.
3. Falling Waters State Park

So, this park isn't technically in Tallahassee; but in an hour and a half you can take a trip to Chipley and see some beautiful waterfalls and sink holes! This trip would be perfect for a long or short weekend. Falling Waters has camp grounds that allow you to stay and enjoy your surroundings in the woods (except with electricity and actual bathrooms, hopefully to your satisfaction). And once again, for my eno lovers out there, they also allow hammock camping!
4. Providence Canyon
(Image Credit: The Great Georgia Quest)
I know what you're thinking, and yes that is a real place. Also known as "The Little Grand Canyon", Providence Canyon is located two and a half hours from Tallahassee -- which is well worth the drive! I think the pictures can speak for itself, but if you plan to make a trip to this beautiful place, be sure to wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty and go when the weather is nice.
5. Florida Caverns State Park

Again, while I can't give Tallahassee credit for this gem, the site is only one hour away from our lovely grounds. Located in Marianna, this natural cave site offers a campground, lakes, and obviously -- caves! Go on any day besides Tuesday and Wednesday to get a tour throughout the caves that last about 45 minutes. And for all you golfers out there, this park also offers a nine-hole course set on beautiful rolling terrain!
While there are many other places that the inner and outer Tallahassee area has to offer, these hidden gems are definitely my top 5 must visits. Giving you an opportunity for a day trip or a weekend trip, you are not likely to be disappointed!
