5 Hidden Gems on Long Island

No matter where on Long Island you are, you’re probably not far from some type of unique, possibly tucked away eatery. From Queens to Montauk, there are so many hidden gems and I’m here to tell you about a few. Whether you prefer sushi or sandwich from a local deli, there’s bound to be something for you.

Bubba's Burrito Bar

Located right on main street in Islip, Bubba’s is a little piece of California on Long Island. Inside the surf themed restaurant you can find menu items like the Guilt Trip, a burrito with chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, fried potatoes, bacon, cheese, sour cream, and “baja sauce.” Yes, I’ve had one. Yes, it’s life changing.

The Cup

Do you like cute coffee shops with a hipster-esque vibe? Do you enjoy an open mic night or two? Well, good news! The Cup Coffeehouse could be your new favorite place. Hidden away right next to the train station in Wantagh, The Cup offers a wide array of coffee, tea, and desserts. I’m a personal fan of their tea lattes served piping hot in a large mug.

Lucharito's

If you ever find yourself in the eastern part of Long Island, definitely pay the town of Greenport a visit. The waterfront town is packed with quaint restaurants and shops, Lucharito’s being one of the most unique. The taqueria and tequila bar offers nachos, quesadillas, and some of the best chicken tacos I’ve ever had. If you’re just stopping by for a drink, I highly recommend the strawberry mint mojito.

Onsen Sushi

For those of you who are sushi lovers, Onsen has actually gotten great reviews in local newspapers as well as the New York Times. Sitting in a shopping center in the small town of Oakdale, the restaurant is very deceiving from the outside. However, when you walk in you are greeted by a friendly yell from the chefs in the back. You can never go wrong with a California roll but they have an impressive list of specialty rolls, too. They may or may not know me by name when I go in there…

SE-Port Deli

SE-Port may look like your average deli from the outside, but they serve some of the most packed out sandwiches named after celebrities and even neighboring towns. Located in East Setauket, SE-Port is home to The Gasm- chicken cutlet, melted mozzarella, and bacon, on a toasted garlic hero with Russian dressing and cole slaw. Their menu goes far beyond that, so stop by and pick from the list of sandwiches that made SE-Port a local favorite.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
