5 Handmade Gifts For When You're Broke

Birthdays, Mother's Day, graduation, Christmas... there are a ton of special occasions throughout the year. One problem: gifts are expensive. But don't worry, I've got you covered. Enjoy these handmade gift ideas that your friend, and your wallet, will love.

1. DIY Candles

Making candles is super easy and fun. You need a few materials to get started, including wax, a wick, and a fragrance. You can get all of these at a craft store, Walmart, or Target for a very low price.

Simply put the wax (which normally comes in block-form) in to a medium-sized pot, and heat over low heat. Stir, and wait until the wax has melted completely. Next, mix in your fragrance of choice (fragrances usually come in liquid form). Then, set your wick up in the container of your choice, and pour the hot, liquid wax in. Then, wait for the wax to harden, and you've got a candle!

2. Make a Personalized Planter

Buy a planter that fits your friend's style, or paint one to really customize it, and plant flowers, herbs, succulents in it.

3. Create Wall Decor

Take a piece of wood, spray paint it, and create a beautiful wall piece!

4. DIY Mason Jar Gifts

Mason jars can be used for a whole lot of things. Enjoy these examples for inspiration!

5. Clothespin Picture Board

Start with just the outside of a picture frame in any color you want. Hang twine from one side to the other, and then use clothespins to attach pictures on to the twine.

Happy gifting!

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
