Since I recently wrote an article about the great reasons to own a cat, I thought it was only fair to stick up for our other furry friends as well. As someone who has grown up around both cats and dogs, I can easily say that though both are different and have their ups and downs, they are both amazingly adorable pets to own. So without further ado, here are 5 great things about owning a dog.

1. Protection

Though this may not be AS true for people with smaller dogs, having a dog by your side at night can make you feel so safe. Dogs are extremely alert and very protective of those they love. Even though my families dog is quite small, her bark is strong enough to scare away even the most courageous of burglars. Even though her bark may be annoying at times, I know that she does it with the intention of keeping us all safe and protected.

2. Cuddliness

Though my dog isn't always the cuddliest it is always so adorable when she sits close to you and wants to be pet. Some dogs are so amazingly cuddly and seeing them love on and bond with their owners can be such a heartwarming experience. From cuddling on your lap to demanding pets dogs are definitely not shy in showing their affection and letting you know just how much they love you.

3. Going for walks

Never worry about exercising alone! Dogs are often extremely active and can benefit from regular walking or other exercise. Whether you take your dog to the park to play fetch, for a walk on a hiking trail or just for a chill time at the beach, both you and your dog will be able to get exercise, have fun and bond with one another.

4. No need to worry about a vacuum!

One of the best things for lazy people is that dogs often make the issue of cleaning up food a non-issue. Drop a piece of your snack or dinner? Simply call for your dog and watch their excitement as they gobble up their free snack! You don't need to worry about breaking out the mop or vacuum or even bothering to bend down. The perfect solution for lazy dog owners and snack loving puppies.

5. Their adorable and hilarious personalities

Just like any person or animal, all dogs are different and it is so fun and amazing to get to bond with your dogs and learn about them. From shy dogs to out going ones, from crazy dogs to calm ones, from active ones to sleepy ones, getting to know your pet is a bonding experience that is often quite like getting to know another person. No matter your dogs personality, they will steal your heart for so many more than just five reasons.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
