In the midst of the election, it seemed like things were so chaotic, but the world around us kept going. Our emotions overwhelm us from this election, but it's important to not forget that good things still happen. The world keeps going.
Here are some things that happened during the election we may not have realized:
1.Ilhan Omar made history as the nation’s first Somali-American legislator.
34-year-old Ilhan Omar makes history as the first Somali-American Muslim legislator in the House of Representatives. Omar came out triumphant in Minnesota’s House race.
2. First Latina elected to US Senate
Catherine Cortez Masto makes history as the first Latina United States Senator after winning in Nevada’s senate race.
3. Cannabis legalized in California, Massachusetts and Nevada
This means that it is no longer criminalized and can be used medically for the people that need it.
4. Indian-American woman elected to the House for the first time
Born in India, Pramila Jayapal immigrate to the US when she was 16. Now she holds a seat in the US House of Representatives.
5. Oregon becomes first state to elect openly LGBT governor
Kate Brown was first outed in 1995. She has since spoken openly about her sexuality. "It doesn’t bother me ... because what I think is really important is that kids see role models,” Brown she said in October. “You can’t be what you can’t see.”
