Five Goals For The Semester That Lies Ahead
Wayne State University

This week hit me hard. I am four weeks into the semester. Fall is here. Every one is starting to get sick. Grades are dropping faster than you even have time to study and to top it all off, the reality of graduation is hitting harder than the hit my bank account has taken since being back at school, I have been looking into more and more internships that will help me advance in the working field and give me more opportunities for the future. So, in the light of being successful, I have given myself five goals to accomplish by the time the fall semester has ended.

1. Join a new club.

For two years, I have been apart of the Wayne State Women’s Golf Team. I always thought that I never had enough time or energy to go join any clubs around campus because being a college athlete can be extremely time consuming. However, this year, I plan to join a club that will benefit my future in someway.

2. Get to know a professor or instructor well enough to use them as a reference on my resume.

Something I have done extremely well throughout my two years a Wayne State is avoiding my professors at all costs. I have never wanted to become that student who annoys a professor or instructor with endless questions about assignments or tests. However, I really want to use my professors as a tool for the next few years in order to help me in the future.

3. Use at least two coupons every time I got to the grocery store.

College is hard. That is not a difficult thing to understand with the countless memes and GIFs floating around the circle of social media. But what I have been noticing, is saving money and finding the cheapest deal on items at the grocery store has become much harder than getting A’s on homework assignments. Over the next semester, I want to use at LEAST two coupons every time I go to the grocery store and then add up the money I have saved. Every penny counts.

4. End this semester dog tired from the hard work put into life, family friends, golf and school.

Each semester so far I have ended final exam week literally thinking that I could give nothing else. I hope to end this semester, and my other semesters to come the exact same way.

5. Find fun and cheap activities around Detroit and take lots of pictures and write about it!

Detroit’s beauty and uniqueness is something that I cannot get over. This city is literally filled with thousands of hidden gems that I am on a hunt to find before I graduate. Hopefully, this semester I get to knock off a few of those hidden gems off my list. And then once I find the gems, I will take as many pictures as I can before my Iphone tells me that I do not have enough storage.

As I accomplish each goal, I plan to write about the experiences I had with them so stay tuned

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
