5 Fun Things To Do In Akron

A lot of college kids always complain that Akron does not have a lot of activities for them. This couldn't be more false! There are a ton of various activities for college kids. Here's a list of some fun adventures in the Akron area.

1) One of a Kind

This dog and cat shelter is only 15 minutes from campus and is perfect for animal lovers. You can either volunteer there or just go in and play with the animals. The staff is very friendly and loves when people come in and entertain the animals. They even have puppies and kittens sometimes!

2) The Gorge

For people who love being outdoors, there are many trails around the Akron area. My personal favorite is the Gorge. This has a few great trails and you can easily go off trail to find your own adventure. My friends and I like to be dare devils and go under the waterfall.

3) Lock 3/Lock View

Lock 3 is a great little spot downtown. In the summer time they have concerts and festivals. In the Winter time they set up a ice skating rink and skate rentals for students are under $5! It is a great little spot to walk around with friends. Across from Lock 3, there is an amazing grilled cheese restaurant/bar that is also a perfect date spot. Everyone has to try Lock View at least once!

4) Highland Square

Highland Square is the hipster part of Akron. Akron sometimes closes the street off for fun festivals every season. Additionally, there is coffee shops, bars and restaurants. It is home to the famous breakfast/brunch place Wally Waffles.

5) Nightlight Cinema

This indie movie theater is a great spot for dates in downtown Akron. The movies they play are actually really good and tickets are a lot more cheaper than a regular theater. During the Halloween time, they play a marathon of scary movies for those of you who like that.

These are just a few of my favorites from the many things that go on around Akron. There is always an adventure waiting to happen. You just have to go out and explore!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
