I was recently invited to an elementary school to talk about my career as a YouTuber and my channel KidLitKat. When I asked the kids, "Who wants to be a YouTuber when they grow up?" all their little hands raised. The perks about being a YouTuber is when you can connect with your fans and meet them in person, but the hard part is telling them that YouTube is not easy. Today I'll be listing the five fun facts (that aren't always fun) about being a YouTuber.
1. Finding Out What You're Good (And Bad) At
When you first start doing YouTube and don't have a set theme to your channel you'll go through a stage of questioning, trying to figure out what you can offer the world. I first thought reviewing picture books was my niche, but then I discovered starting a reading club for teens, young adults and adults where I read aloud manga and diverse literature, while also expressing myself as a fangirl, worked out best for me. After being true to myself I also started discussing topics I was passionate about such as writing, animating, anti-bullying, teen topics, and I'm considered a friend amongst my subscribers (the Miscats).
2. Finally Getting A Style
Just like any form of art, having an original style is one of the most important parts to becoming successful. Once I started getting a set style with a slogan at the end of every video, that's when the Miscats started catching on more.
3. Meeting New Friends (And Foes)
After a few videos you'll begin to see a few familiar faces. These are your subscribers who end up watching all of your videos—despite the fact that they might not really know anything about the topic you are discussing. But like every positive moment in your life, a negative is soon to follow. On some of your videos you'll see trolls and spammers who love to scatter hate by simply watching only part or a few seconds of your video.
4. Expressing Yourself
Youtube is a place for you to freely show the world who you are and be the person you were born to be.
5. Helping Others
One of the reasons I started YouTube was to help others in need. No matter how many subscribers you may have, always know that it's important to show others that you are there for them and that there are some good people in the world.
There are many tips to starting a YouTube channel, some you should follow, others you should take with a grain of salt. The best tip I give anyone wanting to start a channel is to be you, do what you love and shine.
