There are just some things that can only be understood from the perspective of a foreign language major. There are endless amounts of people who have a foreign language as a minor, but how is it for those of us who have taken on the major, you ask? Well look no further. Here are five things that only foreign language majors understand:
1. A truly unique group of people.
I will say that ever since I first began my Spanish major, I have truly been able to "nerd out." People within my major, like myself, really have a true knack for language and we aren't ashamed of sharing different songs we find or books we find in Spanish. We are true nerds of the flock.
2. We like to think we are a part of the culture.
The passion we have for the culture is unreal. We want nothing more than to experience every part of it and to travel everywhere and learn everything there is to know.
3. O.C.D. like you've never seen before.
Once you perfect the grammar, you never go back. Every time you read, write, or talk, you constantly analyze yourself to make sure everything is coming out perfectly and the same goes for hearing someone else speak. Foreign Language majors can be true perfectionists.
4. Professors are like friends.
Foreign Language majors are so rare, so we talk and treat our professors like friends. In classes with 3-5 people, everyone becomes family!
5. We are the biggest advocates for study abroad.
Study abroad is a huge key for foreign language majors. It is an unmatched experience that everyone should go for!
Foreign Language majors are definitely unlike any other major. We love every part of the language, we love culture, and have such a huge passion for culture. I highly recommend majoring in a foreign language. The opportunities that it brings are endless and you will meet some of the greatest and most inspiring people who share a huge passion right alongside with you!
