1. Coffee
Coffee is delicious and addicting, but for many years was considered to be bad for you. People were trying so hard to wean themselves off it. Now some health professionals think that coffee may even be good in moderation and possibly be helpful for preventing dementia, reducing risk of colon cancer and more. So until further notice, I guess we can feel free to go out and sip our lattes in moderation.
2. Red Wine
Wine lovers rejoice! Previously, red wine was just considered a toxin, hence the term "intoxicated', but now some say it might have health benefits for the heart due to its antioxidants, including resveratrol and proanthocyanidins. Proanthocyanidins may reduce oxidative damage in the body and may also help prevent heart disease and cancer. Resveratrol is found in grape skin.
3. Eggs
In the past, eggs were considered to have possible link to high cholesterol. In particular, the egg yolks were shunned as most unhealthy part of the egg! Now, however, eggs are hailed as a great protein and are not the source of bad cholesterol that health professionals once thought. The egg yolk is actually now known to be the more nutrient packed part of the egg!
4. Bread
On the opposite side of things, bread, which used to be known throughout history as "the staff of life" is now considered a guilty pleasure by most people. Due to it's gluten content and the heightened rate of gluten insensitivity, bread is a source of gastric distress for some and weight gain for many.
5. Soy
When soy came on the scene in the late 70's and early 80's, it was claimed to be the best source of protein around and an "all natural and vegan" food. It appealed to vegetarians as well as people who were just sick of eating animal protein all the time. However, these days, soy is accused of causing thyroid problems and an increased risk of breast cancer if eaten too frequently.
