Every town resident knows the local favorites in regards to a good meal or simply a well-deserved treat. For visitors or newcomers, it can become a long journey of trial and error to find out where to spend their money (and their calories) on meals and desserts. To help shorten such a frustrating process, and hopefully save you some time, here is a list of the places to go when going out becomes stressful.

1. Ditch the Starbucks Safety Net

When strolling down Main St. in Downtown Rochester, stroll on into Dessert Oasis and wind down with couch seating and something delicious. Serving up the best cup of hot chocolate in town, there is no better meeting of quaint and quality than this little coffee lounge. Sip on a beautifully foamed cappuccino and fork over the to-die-for cheesecake while listening to a live music performance.

2. Take your sushi craving to Take

Take Sushi (“Ta-keh”)was rewarded recognition as one of the top sushi cuisines in Rochester Hills since 2011, and for good reason. Not only is the freshness of the food noteworthy on its own, the atmosphere of Take inspires anyone to try the authentic Japanese dishes. Bonus, enjoy a salty cup of miso soup and cold ginger salad with your sushi order. You shouldn’t need a reason to never pay for an overpriced Kroger California roll again.

3. The Best Slice

Nothing beats a brick oven pizza, especially one that you don’t have to share. The “Subway” of pizzas if you will, MOD brings out the culinary artist in any pizza-lover. Choose from an overwhelming variety of toppings and sauces, (or don’t choose - get them all…).

4. Garlic Lovers- Unite!

Mediterranean food is a guilty pleasure of mine, specifically the garlic sauce and hot basket of pita bread they bring to your table when you sit down at Shish Palace. Order a chicken shawarma sandwich or a plate of fresh hummus for guaranteed satisfaction.

5. Heavenly Sweets

Looking for something sweet to top off your night on the town? If you find yourself walking by Holy Cannoli on Main St., look no further. Splurge in the unique variations of their classic Italian dessert by biting into a crispy cannoli shell with sweet ricotta filling. Valuable advice: Make sure you try every flavor they have for the day before you commit to a purchase!!

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
