If you don't know who Wes Anderson is, then I deeply apologize for your precious, unenlightened brain. Don't fear, however, because there is still hope for you..
Wes Anderson does it all. He is a film producer, film director, actor, and screenwriter. He also manages to utilize these talents to cultivate some of the most unique, visually enchanting films of our time. Each film brings significant feeling, from love to nostalgia and everything in between. Not to mention the fact that most of his movies have an All-Star cast.
Here's what to watch if you want to see what I'm talking about. However, be warned, you may find yourself hooked:
5. "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" (2004)
Follow oceanographer Steve Zissou, his potential son, and his crew as they set out to hunt down the mysterious, potentially non-existent shark that killed Zissou's partner during the documentary filming of their latest adventure. From pirates and kidnapping to bankruptcy and more, the film is a wild ride from start to finish.
Although this isn't the most popular movie to start with, this film is a great taste of Wes Anderson's quirkiness and willingness to create films that are unique and odd, yet remain visually stimulating and fun.
4. "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (2009)
Mr. Fox is just trying to be the best husband he can be, but he keeps fighting his past as he faces the temptation to raid the local farms. After cracking and threatening his marriage and the safety of his friends, Mr. Fox must find a way to protect his loved ones from the humans.
This movie is quirky, fun, and at times a little bit of a tear-jerker. It's the perfect combination for a Wes Anderson starter pack.
3. "The Royal Tenenbaums" (2001)
Royal Tenenbaum (yes that's his actual name) decides to make up for years of bad parenting when he finds out that he's dying, so he calls all his children back home to make amends.
Let's be honest, everyone loves a good movie about a dysfunctional family. As said perfectly by Jack Matthews, "This comedy-drama about a dysfunctional family of eccentric geniuses is exactly the kind of movie America could use. It's funny, poignant, laced with irresistibly flawed characters and focuses on the power of love in a family."
2. "Moonrise Kingdom" (2012)
Sam and Suzy are star-crossed lovers determined to be together. Sam, a khaki scout, uses his navigational skills to help the two run away so that they can live happily ever after without fear of their parents telling them no. However, trouble arises as a major hurricane begins brewing over the tiny island that they live on...
As one of the most popular Wes Anderson films (and my personal favorite), "Moonrise Kingdom" is one that will leave you with a hope for young love and a nostalgia for the days of your youth. Sam and Suzy perfectly capture the childhood memories of our first love and our "rebellious" phase.
1. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014)
Arguably one of the best films of Wes Anderson's career thus far, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" recounts the life of Gustav H, an infamous hotel concierge, and his lobby boy, Zero Moustafa, who eventually becomes his most trusted friend and confidant. These two take you through a visually enchanting roller coaster as you encounter comedic misadventures mixed tastefully with deeply emotional, though provoking ideas.
"The Grand Budapest Hotel" is a strong consideration if you want to see Anderson's perspective on life, love, and all that they encompass.
Now that you've had a taste of each film, I hope you can appreciate and understand the quirky, complex and imaginative world of Wes Anderson and his films.
