Everyone loves movies for the same reason we've all loved stories for so long, they draw us away from our problems and create a distraction and release. In this day and age, we are lucky enough to have access to them essentially without a limit, hence the millennial epidemic of binge watching. In the unlikely event you are not much of a binge-watcher, chances are you’re saving yourself and your viewing stamina up for special occasions, something that will really help you unwind. Binge-watchers need this too. In fact, we’re all often in need of a good tear-jerker from time to time, whether its to distract us from our problems, or to give us an outlet to react to them. In any event, here are a few films to help you cope:
1. "Brokeback Mountain" (2005)
Sincerely and somewhat unexpectedly the most heartbreaking love story imaginable; the story of two men whose relationship proves that the only thing worse than love unrequited, is love undercover and unfulfilled.
2. "Boys Don’t Cry" (1999)
An all too horrifyingly accurate portrayal of the most extreme and undue societal prejudices and resulting harms faced by the transgender community. The film still hits close to home for many still handling these issues over a decade later.
3. "Submarine" (2010)
A quirky, dryly humorous tale of teenage angst and the sobering realities of dealing with loss, mental illness, romantic heartbreak, and the responsibility a young man feels to attempt to hold his family together.
4. "Requiem for a Dream" (2000)
A shocking story of intertwined subplots showcasing the realities of several kinds of addictions and the devastating effect those addictions have on relationships, ambitions, and the sanity of the self. The focus on family cyclical abuse of both substances and fame creates a heart wrenching story that is sure to bring a viewer to tears.
5. "Talhotblond" (2009)
The original documentary on Internet identity falsification—or catfishing—and the murderous and mentally scarring consequences of one man’s choice of deception and lingering obsession on a world of fiction he created for himself and how that caused the world around him to spiral out of control.
