As the colder weather approaches us, many women are left wondering how to maintain their unique style while staying warm, comfortable and practical. It can be tricky to avoid outdated, basic trends when all of the most popular fall garments happen to be the coziest— yes, I'm talking about Uggs and leggings. Each year as the seasons change, I try my best to embrace new looks while staying true to my personal style; mixing old pieces with new ones, current trends with previous ones. But with all the fads that come and go, it's important to recognize that there are certain pieces you can purchase that you'll want to bring out every single October, regardless of what crazes are dominating the fashion media.

1. Your perfect autumn jacket.

Whether it's distressed denim, oversized leather or faux shearling, you want to find a jacket that ties into your fall wardrobe effortlessly. A great jacket is an easy way to dress up any casual outfit; it adds a touch of personality and style without looking like you tried too hard. Picture jeans and a plain t-shirt with a pair of flats— basic at first, but when paired with a fashionable jacket and a killer pair of sunglasses, you've created a look that is both chic and comfortable. Stores like Zara and Topshop carry beautiful jackets at reasonable prices, as well as websites like Asos and Missguided.

2. Your go-to pair of jeans.

We all have different shapes; different hips, different calves, and different curves altogether. There is no one pair of jeans that looks equally good on every body type, so it's important to find what works for you and stick with it. Some people love slightly baggy boyfriend jeans cuffed at the ankle, while others prefer a skinny dark wash ankle-grazer. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with a good pair of black skinny jeans, preferably with small rips at the knees. I find that they work with any outfit, and give an edgy twist to an otherwise demure look.

3. Black ankle boots.

I cannot emphasize enough how many times little black booties have saved my life. They're versatile, comfortable and warm without being over-the-top, and they go with virtually any outfit. Whether you're in a midi dress and stockings or leggings and a cozy sweater, you never have to think twice when these simple staples are a part of your collection. Heels are a quick way to dress yourself up, and there are so many comfortable ankle boots on the market that pain and blisters aren't even a concern. Whether you prefer a mid heel or a high heel, these basic boots are always an option.

4. An oversized bag.

Givenchy, Celine and Hermes make handbags that are worth more than my college education, but they aren't necessary to complete an outfit. Stores like H&M and Aldo make a variety of unique handbags that are sure to add a modern touch to your closet. Oversized bags are perfect for the colder seasons during school, work, internships etc. They'll hold everything from your phone and wallet to all of the books and assignments you drag onto the train and in and out of cabs, and maintain a polished look through it all.

5. A sexy staple.

With quickly dropping temperatures and the sad demise of summertime, we can often be tempted to throw on as many layers as possible, add a giant scarf and call it a day. I think it's important to show off our assets no matter the time of year, while remaining cozy on harsh fall/winter days. To accomplish this seemingly impossible task, I recommend mixing and matching; a sheer top underneath a fur coat, a velvet bodysuit paired with a heavy bomber, or a satin camisole beneath a biker jacket are just a few examples of this ever-popular trend. Pairing racy pieces with heavier garments makes for an outfit that is both playful and wearable.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
