New Englanders know that spring doesn’t really start until April, and March is still unpredictable for winter weather. However, with warmer temperatures and sunnier skies just around the corner, it’s almost time to get back outside and enjoy nature. One of the best places to enjoy a beautiful hike or stroll through nature is the good old Granite State. Growing up in New Hampshire (and still living here now), my family always went hiking on the weekends. Over the course of a few years we had a list of our favorite family hikes in the state. So if you and your friends or family are looking to head out and get some fresh air when spring finally comes around, here are my top 5 favorite family-friendly hikes in New Hampshire.
1. Lake Solitude
Length: 2 miles round trip
Difficulty (all hikes are easy-moderate): 3 out of 5
Lake Solitude is an all-time favorite of mine. The trail is located on Mount Sunapee so there are many other trails around to hike. Lake Solitude is one of the shortest though and the most family-friendly. It’s a good workout getting to the top with some steeper parts and rocks to climb, but the top is plenty rewarding. At the top of the mountain is Lake Solitude and you can even climb an extra 5-10 minutes to be able to overlook the lake. It’s an absolutely breathtaking view that doesn’t put too much of a strain on a more inexperienced hiker.
2. Rattlesnake
Length: 1 mile round trip
Difficulty: 1 out of 5
Rattlesnake is an incredibly easy hike that leads to one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen. Located in Holderness NH, West Rattlesnake is a super easy day hike that can be hiked by everyone young and old and offers stunning views of Lake Sunapee at the summit. I hiked it as a little kid with my parents and grandparents and many times after that. Pack a picnic lunch to eat at the top and enjoy the day with this beautiful and family friendly hike.
3. Lonesome Lake
Length: 3.1 miles round trip
Difficulty: 4 out of 5
Lonesome Lake is part of Franconia Notch State Park and is a moderate/easy hike perfect at any time of year. Not only is it a gorgeous hike in the non-winter months, but many tend to frequent the trail in the winter as well for snowshoeing. This trail not only offers a beautiful lake at the summit but also an AMC hut that looks over it which is available to spend the night in upon prior booking. While I personally have never stayed in the lodge, the hike is awesome and I highly recommend the day trip.
4. Welch and Dickey
Length: 4.1 miles round trip
Difficulty: 5 out of 5
Welch and Dickey, located near Thornton NH, is the most difficult hike on this list but is still doable for families with children. For more inexperienced hikers or younger kids, I’d recommend only hiking Welch and then heading back down. Dickey start out with a bit of an incline so that may turn off some hikers. Still a great hike though with beautiful views and perfect for warmer weather.
5. North Pack Monadnock
Length: Can be up to 6 miles round trip depending on route
Difficulty: 3 out of 5
While Pack and regular Monadnock are both great hikes, North Pack doesn’t seem to get as much attention or love. However, North Pack Monadnock is one of my favorite hikes due to the expansive summit, lovely views, and all-around enjoyable hike. When I was in fourth grade we hiked it as a class trip and it was a hike that a group of fourth graders could easily accomplish. The hike is appropriate for families with kids or dogs and is a great outing in the warm weather.
