As someone who commuted from Long Island to Manhattan for four years, I picked up a few helpful habits and tricks along the way. I would spend 8 to 9 hours at school some days with no way of simply running home if I forgot something. This made me pretty travel-savvy and I came up with a list of essentials for anyone who will be facing the same situation that I did. Syllabus week is right around the corner, so consult this list before going back to school shopping!

1. A laptop

A laptop isn’t just useful for taking notes in class, it can also be used for doing homework in between classes or on breaks (if you’re ambitious like that). If you’re someone who takes a train to school, you’d be surprised at how much you can get done during the ride.

2. Tupperware

Don’t laugh, but a good set of tupperware can really come in handy. You’re going to get hungry, and you’re going to want a spill-proof container to throw in your bag. If you do a bit of research, you can even find ones that can be put in the microwave.

3. An umbrella

Because one minute it’s just a “cloudy day” and you’ll “be fine," then the next minute you’re stuck in a downpour. Take it from someone who has walked several city blocks in the rain– learn from my mistakes and invest in an umbrella.

4. Cash

It might seem like a given, but carrying cash is one of the most important tips I can pass along. You never know when you’re going to find yourself in an emergency situation where you need money and can’t use a card. I’m not talking about $500, but keeping a spare $20 or $40 on you can definitely be helpful.

5. A portable phone charger

If you know anything about iPhone batteries, you know how poorly they hold a charge (especially if you’re like me and constantly refresh every social media platform you have). Even if you don’t have an iPhone, having a backup charger can be a life saver. You don’t want to be that person who shows up to class to discover that all the seats next to the outlets are taken with a phone on 3% battery.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
