We´ve all heard how sports and physical activity can help clear your head and refuel when life isn't giving you a break. But what if you don't like sports? What if you are unable to participate in them? Does that mean there is no way out of this abyss that is causing you so much anxiety?

The answer is no. Different people find different ways to calm their inner demons, depending on their personality, preferences and abilities. If you aren't a sports person, you shouldn't have to be forced to do them if it isn't your thing. In fact, doing something you don't like might bring you even more desperation and have the opposite effect. Here are a few ideas of some things that can help ease that inner turmoil.

1. Nature and Animals

Have you ever heard of people "taking a walk" when they are nervous? Well, aside from the healing power of walking, there is another factor involved too: nature. Whether it is petting an animal or walking down a sandy beach, the essence of nature never fails to purify your soul.

2. Writing

Putting thoughts on paper never hurt anyone. On several occasions, we aren't aware of the source of our anxiety because we are only focused on what we want to be focused on. We neglect and hide our worries, only to let them take over intrinsically. Writing is a way of getting all those issues out, acknowledging them, solving them and then moving on.

3. Calming Music

We are so used to the rapid and intense melodies of pop culture, that we often forget the healing qualities of classical music and soft tunes. Take some time to lay down and relax while listening to some soft music. You´ll notice your breath slowing down and your thoughts gradually pacing themselves.

4. Talking

Some of us are avid speakers. We love to talk and share with others our thoughts and feelings. Whether it is speaking to a friend or recording your voice on your phone, externalizing your thoughts is always a good start to taking a breather.

5. Sleeping

We definitely underestimate the power of sleeping. Many times, the reason behind anxiety is even more simple than we originally thought. The lack of sleep can make you uneasy and stressed out. Therefore, having enough sleep and giving your body a break is always a must.

The key to calming down is simply: do what you love. The more you love something, the less effort it requires you to put into it. Passion and ability take over and you get instant gratification. There is no need to stress or worry about perfection, because you aren't doing it for the final outcome, but for the process. Just do what you love and let it bring you back to yourself.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
