Typically while writing, I'll gain inspiration relatively quickly. I'm easily inspired by nature, God, and experiences I've collected. Lately, however, writer's block has been a tight weight around my ankle sucking every bit of inspiration out of me.
I'm sure I'm not the only person who has ever struggled with this formidable foe which squelches the spirit of all it encounters. In honor of writer's block here are five tactics I've found that semi-assist me in dusting off the 'ole typewriter (I wish, well kind of, technology is super dope and I'd have to scratch so many unusable transcripts if I used a typewriter) and getting to work.
1. Freeflow write for a couple of minutes
Set a timer and don't let yourself stop writing for three, five, or ten minutes at a time. Don't worry about misspellings or punctuation just keep your flow going and see what comes out of it.
2. Write about the last thing that truly made you laugh
Maybe it was a conversation with a friend, a funny video, or reading something silly.
3. Write about the last thing that made you cry
Don't worry if you were brought to tears by a picture of a puppy in a cup. Embrace it, pour your heart and soul into describing that cute little fuzz ball.
4. Reminisce about how you celebrated Christmas growing up
Don't spare any details, remember the colors, the smells, how it felt to lay underneath the Christmas tree and gaze up at all of the lights adorning the branches.
5. Capture the meal that makes your mouth water every single time
It could have been a steaming bowl of your grandma's chicken dumplings, the best mac n cheese you've ever experienced, or a burrito bowl from chipotle.
Writer's block is never fun. I hope these tips can help you get back in your groove. If nothing else just do what I did and write an article about how to get over writers' block.
