Before I begin, I just want to point out that, although I don’t plan to vote for Donald Trump unless he somehow finds a way to really change my mind, I am in no way trying to convince anyone not to vote for him. Instead, I am just going to be pointing out some s things that he has said so far in 2016, both in speeches and on Twitter.
1. Fifth Avenue Madness
On January 23 in Iowa, Donald Trump said in his speech that he “could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody” and “wouldn’t lose any voters” because of it. What am I understanding from this? First of all, it sounds like he’s saying that he’s above the law. And second, in a world filled with violence, he’s almost saying that as long as you don’t get in trouble, it’s okay to commit crimes.
Would Donald Trump go out in the middle of the street and shoot someone? Probably not. In all honesty, he probably would get thrown in jail. Would he lose voters for doing this? Maybe, maybe not. But he shouldn’t say things like this regardless of whether it’s true or a figure of speech.
2. Political Correctness
On January 27, Trump refused to call reporter Megyn Kelly a “bimbo” because it would be “politically incorrect.” Just a day later, he released a video about political correctness and stated that “Being politically correct takes too much time.” In my opinion, this sounds a bit hypocritical. If he really didn’t care about being politically correct, he would have insulted Megyn Kelly as so many of his followers were doing. However, I think he realized that he would be called sexist and possibly lose some voters because of a derogatory name.
3. Politicians: All Talk, No Action
Donald Trump tweeted on January 23 that “politicians are all talk and no action.” The definition of politician is “a person who is professionally involved in politics, especially as a holder of or a candidate for an elected office.” Since Trump is a candidate for presidency, he could, therefore, be called a politician. Which would mean he is also all talk and no action.
4. Trump vs. Cruz
As I scrolled through the various Donald Trump articles and Tweets, I noticed that he had begun to single out one of the candidates: Ted Cruz. Now, I don’t know much about this man. To be quite honest, I don’t know much about any of the candidates except for Trump, Clinton and Sanders. (I promise I will do my research before voting this year, though.)
Anyway, apparently it was recently revealed that Cruz might be a Canadian citizen. In response, Trump has basically ordered that Cruz tell the truth or drop out. Furthermore, Trump tweeted that “Because he was born in Canada and was, until recently, a Canadian citizen, many believe he cannot run!” This isn’t exactly a dumb tweet, but as a candidate for presidency, I feel that Trump should know whether or not Cruz can run for president rather than saying that many people don’t think he can. On a side note, I’d also like to point out that many people believe that Trump should be disqualified after making a statement about Muslims in December of 2015.
Finally, Donald Trump called Ted Cruz a “nasty guy” who “tells lies.” This was in response to Cruz’s ad campaign that claims Trump was/is “planning to bulldoze a widow’s house to build a “limousine parking lot at his casino.” Again, this isn’t exactly a dumb statement because it’s partially true. Trump never accomplished parking lot plans. However, it was revealed that he was “in a multi-year legal battle to take over the property until a state court ruled against him.” This means that Trump is also a liar in some ways.
5. Childish Insults
The final instance of Donald Trump saying something dumb was on January 23. Trump tweeted that Glenn Beck is “dumb as a rock.” Just as with Cruz, I don’t know who Glenn Beck is. But my point is that Trump, a grown man, used a childish insult toward another grown man. When I think about the President of the United States, I can’t imagine them ever calling anyone as dumb as a rock. Now, they might insult someone, but it should at least be more creative and eloquent in the insults.
BONUS: The Creepy Kids
Speaking of childish, did you see the Freedom Kids video from Trump’s January 14th speech? Although he was not directly involved in the making of the creepy song and dance routine, the young singers highlighted many of Trump’s main points in his attempt to become president. It’s already scary enough that so many people support Donald Trump, but hearing his ideas in a song performed by children was even scarier.
