It's time to pack up and move into your dorm room for your first year of college. You know what essentials to bring and you might know what things aren't necessary to bring, but what about the items you're on the fence about? Here's five things you definitely should bring, even if you think you won't need it.

1. First Aid Kit

Before I left for college my freshman year, my grandpa made me a first aid kit with everything from bandages and burn cream to Benadryl. I thought it was all pretty unnecessary, but let me tell you, it was not. First aid items aren't always needed for serious injuries. Blisters from your new shoes? Band aids. Burnt your hand on your curling iron? Burn cream. Allergic reaction? Benadryl. Not only will you use it all the time for yourself, but you'll be the go to for your friends too.

2. Sewing Kit

The unfortunate and inevitable truth is that something of yours is going to rip or a button is going to fall off. You don't need to know how to sew, but if you're gonna find someone else to sew it for you, a needle and thread are still going to be necessary. You can't count on other people to supply them for you, so you should have a sewing kit handy just in case.

3. Extra Phone Charger

It seems to be that everyone only ever has one phone charger in their possession at a time. We all know how flimsy phone chargers are and when your's bites the dust you're gonna want a backup readily available. This especially goes for anyone without a car because the charger the school store sells is guaranteed to be way over priced. It's also useful for when you company in your room and you're both on five percent; your friends will love you for being prepared.

4. Clothes You "Don't Care About"

When packing up all your clothes it only makes sense to not pack clothes you know you won't wear. However, it turns out you're going to need at least one outfit you're willing to ruin. Colleges love to have events that involve throwing paint or getting dirty in some way and they aren't something you're going to want to miss. Spare yourself the trouble of driving to Walmart and buying clothes to purposefully ruin, and just pack some with you.

5. Your Favorite Stuffed Animal

I'm sure you've been trying to convince yourself that you don't need to bring it with you to college because you're an adult now, but I'm here to tell you that you're going to need it at some point. College isn't always fun and when you're crying because you just failed your third calculus exam, you're going to wish you had your teddy to cuddle with. You don't need to keep it on display for everyone to see; hide it in under your bed or in your closet. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
