1. “We didn’t realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun” –Winnie The Pooh.

You’ll remember the ‘little things’ a lot more clearly than you think you will. A simple drive to somewhere scenic after the sun has set, spending the night in each other’s dorms, or even just goofing off and doing homework together; don’t take for granted the seemingly insignificant time you get to spend with your friends.

2. "Let’s start by taking a smallish nap or two…” –Winnie The Pooh

I took naps for granted before I started college, but now my eyes have been opened. Whether it be 20 minutes or 2 hours, a nap’s a nap and I’ll take them all. As a way to escape stress, pass the time before dinner, or just to catch up on sleep, a nap is a magical thing.

3. “Every adventure requires a first step.” – Alice in Wonderland

The first step is always the hardest, but I’ve been trying my best to live without trepidation and just go for it. My first semester has ingrained in me a deep yearning for something more. Life has gifted me a hunger to get the most out of the life I’m living and to never miss the opportunity to partake in something amazing.

4. "Some people are worth melting for.” –Frozen

I’ve met some of the most incredible people in such a short period of time; friends that will last a lifetime and beyond. I’ve discovered if you don’t value someone enough to sacrifice for them, your friendship isn’t on the level it needs to be. I’ve met people who I’d cross oceans for and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s a beautiful thing—having people who mean more to you than your own wellbeing. Learning to care so immensely for people I’ve known for such a short while has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life, and I only hope to see my heart continue to accept people in.

5. "Look for the bear necessities, the simple bear necessities! Forget about your worries and your strife...” -Jungle Book

A simple, content life is all I seek. I have seen the beauty of living a simple, contented life and it’s something I wish to have for the rest of my life. My perspective on life has been changed in such a short period of time, as I’ve abandoned the hopes of being eternally joyous and rather decided that leading a satisfied life is the best thing that could happen to me.

The first half of my freshman year has ultimately been an incredible experience. I’ve learned so much about myself in such a brief period of time and I can’t wait to continue discovering myself.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
