We all have days that feel like they are a punishment and sometimes we have them several times in a row. It is easy to lose sight of your values when life feels dark and unfair, so here are several reminders to tell yourself when you are struggling. This is particularly apparent when different aspects of life like education, work, socialization, community, relationships, friendships, family obligations, and issues with yourself all combine to create a stressful mix. Or maybe it’s a more complex problem concerning one area. Whatever it is, clear your mind, and don’t forget what’s important to you.
1. You are not weak.
Just because there are hard times and we can become extremely stressed with the pressure of all the combining factors in our lives, doesn’t mean we are not able to get through it. Even if you are not confident in yourself, the fact that you are persistently trying showcases an enormous amount of strength.
2. Things will be different in a week/month/year.
Whatever is bothersome or stressful at the moment will not last forever, and most likely things will be resolved in a set span of time. whenever I have an intense schedule where I have a ton of academic obligations mixed with social obligations, I tell myself that everything will be peaceful and calm in a week.
3. There’s no shame in asking for help, or asking someone for emotional support.
The best way to conquer something that is troubling you is to not do it alone. Even if you just tell someone that you are not in the best place, at least someone has you in mind and there is a sense of positivity and security in knowing that someone supports your ability to overcome the obstacles.
4. Breathe.
Stop over-thinking. It is far more important that you take a deep breath and have faith that everything will be okay in the future, whether things remain the same or change. You are more important than who or what is bothering you. Take a deep breath or take a few minutes to meditate and exhale all of the negativity you are facing. It is okay to lose the feeling of security, you are not at blame, and you will feel more yourself when the stress is in the past.
5. Do not forget to take care of yourself.
Be kind to yourself. There are essential things you should do to maintain good self-care. Make sure you have enough time to eat, sleep, and take moments for yourself. Try not to sacrifice things you need to do for yourself to get caught up on other things. Even if it is just sitting down for five minutes to eat lunch, your self-care matters. It is understandable that at times, we have no idea how we are going to manage our busy schedules, but do not doubt your self-importance. Care for yourself during your stressful times and always.
