For anyone who is a size 14 and up, shopping can be not only frustrating but embarrassing. For me, I am a size 16 with wide hips, butt, and breasts. So when I walk into stores like PacSun or Hollister, all I feel is ashamed of my shape and size. More and more department stores have resorted to a one-size scale that really only fits those who are sizes 0-5. Some have even gotten rid of Extra-Large sizes. While shopping this past weekend I experienced a myriad of emotions.
1) Why the hell would I only buy half a shirt?
In today's society crop tops are a big fashion statement. Now I'm not saying curvy girl can't pull them off - we can - but why would you spend the same amount of money on a crop top that you would spend on a full sized shirt? This literally doesn't even make sense.
2) Why do they make shirts so form fitting?
For most curvy women, our breast size ranges from anywhere between C cups to DDD. Not everyone is the same but the majority experience this frustrating issue. For me, I always have to go up in a size just so my breasts don't bust out of the shirt. If you are a plus sized woman, there is usually an additional charge for "more fabric." Department stores seriously need to fix this issue.
3) When "plus size" models aren't plus sized!
I hate, hate, hate it when you walk into a retail store that advertises plus sizes but their idea of plus size is a size 14 and a XL. Umm, plus sizes start at a size 14 - which is the American average for a young woman by the way! If they advertise plus size then the department stores should offer a larger range of plus sizes.
4) When you want to buy lingerie and all that they have are skimpy ones.
When I want to buy some cute underwear and bras my options are extremely limited. In most stores who sell lingerie, the options range from G-string thongs to lace cheeky panties. I for one like to be comfortable and have my booty covered. For those who are fans of Pink, you may have noticed the biggest size they have in delicates is a size large and for bras end at a C cup. So if you have a booty like I do, then you have to venture out to Victoria Secret for anything bigger. But if you are bigger than an XL in underwear then, unfortunately, you are out of luck.
5) When you try something on and get dirty looks from bystanders.
Being thick my entire life, I have had the pleasure of growing thick skin - no pun intended. The worst kind of feeling is when you are in a store holding up a really cute shirt that may be a little flirty - or could even be a crop top - and the people walking by give you a dirty and disgusted look. Now I'm not one to be easily upset, but when complete strangers start looking at you a certain way you begin to doubt yourself. But for everyone, even if you are a size 2 and flawless, never doubt your beauty. It's what is on the inside that really matters.
Whether you are skinny and fit or curvy and busty, it is always easier to cave in the self-doubt and silly insecurities. But always remember that your weight or the size you wear does not define you. If anything, it sets you apart from everyone else. So bask in the glory of your curves, don't feel ashamed or silly for rocking that crop top or for wearing lingerie. If you feel beautiful then embrace it.
